  • Seprand - Articles and Guides about GrapheneOS by the community

Hey folks! We would like to announce Seprand (Security, Privacy, Android), a website that a few community moderators and community members have created. We will be publishing various articles and guides that (mostly) have to do with GrapheneOS as well as Android in general.

The goal is to provide information that's frequently asked, but that doesn't fit on the official documentation. The website is not meant to replace the official docs, but rather supplement it.

We have a backlog of articles and guides written which we'll be polishing up and publishing in the coming days and weeks.

The website can be found at https://seprand.github.io/ and the GitHub repository is at https://github.com/SePrAnd/seprand.github.io.

The community's feedback is very much appreciated.

Articles

Just read the first article "Best User Profile Setup on GraphenOS".

I think it is well written and extremely helpful for newcomers who are just getting into GrapheneOS and dealing with how and if to utilize user profiles.

"Back then" I gathered a lot of information about profiles from this forum and tried out the rest by trial and error. Although this forum is an information goldmine - I really would have appreciated having a guide like this at that time.

But even for users who are already familiar with the topic and have tinkered around with different profile setups, this article is a nice, condensed summary and overview of what user profiles are all about.

Big thanks for this great idea and its good implementation; I'm already looking forward to further content!

Nice work! If i could make a suggestion as it seems to be a reoccuring theme aswell; How to obtain apps? Perhaps in order of most recommended from a security perspective with a short motivation of the pro's and cons.

Yes please, do more of these.
The User Profiles are one of the first things that came into my mind. The Empty Owner Profile is the exact thing I was thinking to do and it just helped me to direct myself.
      Thanks a lot!

Great stuff! Love the succint but detailed explanation on the first article.

If there's one thing I would add it would be an option for light mode. I have eye sensitivity issues and I can't look at a dark screen for too long so this would be a really useful feature for me and anyone else with eye strain.

yore If there's one thing I would add it would be an option for light mode.

There is a light/dark mode toggle. On mobile it's located on the site menu, at the very bottom. On desktop it seems to be located at the very bottom of every page?
        Edit: matchbox was quicker!

Excellent idea, and what a great article! to open with! I'm kind of the "GOS expert" in my circle of friends, and they've asked me this question a lot. It'll be a lot easier to just forward them this length than to have to explain it all over and over every time.

Bookmarked. Looking forward to seeing how this develops. I understand that the information has to be accurate and everything, but will you be accepting user submissions? I'd like to throw a few thing articles together myself if that's alright. I don't mind if you have to review them first, I understand.

Adding my support to this, and can we please also make sure it includes a section on why you should not use Aurora, or F-Droid, or MicroG, or any of that other stuff aside from perhaps Obtainium.

A brief introduction to Obtainium might also help, along with either a rundown of how to use AppVerifier or a link to the Side of Burritos video that already does an excellent job of it, though perhaps tutorials on third-party apps may be a little bit out of scope. Maybe just a link to the Obtainium Wiki would be better, I can't say for sure what would be best.

I know Obtainium isn't officially supported, but it's the only app solution I've seen recommended by mods on this forum besides Accrescent and Sandboxed Play Store. Pretty sure I've even seen @GrapheneOS suggest using it once or twice.

Van-de-GraaffeneOS Bookmarked. Looking forward to seeing how this develops. I understand that the information has to be accurate and everything, but will you be accepting user submissions? I'd like to throw a few thing articles together myself if that's alright. I don't mind if you have to review them first, I understand.

At this point, we're not accepting user submissions, but community members are able to submit issues for consideration of course.

In the future, we may open it up so that community members can submit PRs, but we figured that at least to start with, we should keep things tighter till we get our sea legs under us.

Understood. If at some point things start opening up, could you make an announcement on here? This board is usually where I get my information on what's happening with GrapheneOS.

              Also...

I wanted to edit this post to include the following information, but I think the window of opportunity expired.

After thinking on it a little, I don't think that information on using Obtainium correctly would be out of scope. In fact, I think it would really help to have some additional information on security-conscious best use practices, such as using trusted sources, staying away from F-Droid official, and using AppVerifier (even manually, if necessary). Obtainium's official documentation explains how to install anything from anywhere in any way, which may be unacceptable for GrapheneOS users with serious threat models.
