DeletedUser177 Thank you very much for posting all that. I was able to get RCS working again after just following steps 1-4. Incredible how many variables must be considered.
If RCS just broke on you, do this
Just upgraded to a Pixel 9, followed all steps and still no dice, definitely interested in any other alternatives @DeletedUser177
I noticed you mentioned not to install it in a secondary profile. I'm using the owner profile as an admin account so I'm wondering... would it be possible to only set up RCS for the second account?
Based on some quick searches I did before the switch to GOS, there was information that lead me to believe that RCS would work across multiple profiles. What I was hoping to do is have 3 profiles (admin, personal and work). I only need RCS to work on personal and work profiles. Am I out of luck?
Thanks!!
NetRunner88 this is true
Your genius is showing! I literally couldn't have done it without your insight!! Thank you so much for helping me through this!!! I took your information about switching back to the stock messenger and then I looked at the permissions of the google messages app. I noticed that all of the settings I had set when it was default had changed. I edited the settings to what they should be and then switch back to that being the default and RCS activated! You really shed some light on the issue and for that I am eternally grateful.
Thank you for sharing this. This is why I fucking love the GrapheneOS community. Everyone just wants to help each other learn more.
DeletedUser177 This got it working for me, but if I set those perms back to deny it stops working
So I did all the above steps and now I am stuck on the verification of my number. Specifically, "Setting up..." Trying to verify. Anyone got a work around for this?

I've tried everything, and my phone still has RCS messages that don't work. It's giving me the message "No SIM card compatible with this device is detected." I don't know what's going on. I've uninstalled the Google Messages app, reinstalled it, cleared the data and cache, cleared the data and cache of the carrier's services and communications... also the Play Store and Google Play services... and everything remains the same. I'm lost, and I'm an "advanced" user.
Thanks to everyone in advance!
amuq Hey, I've been encountering this too. Did you ever find a solution or workaround?

hasta ahora nada.... sigo igual, imagino que alguna actualizacion lo resolvera, al igual que creo que una de las ultimas actualizaciones causo el error

So far nothing.... I'm still the same, I imagine that some update will solve it, just as I think that one of the last updates caused the error.

+1, this solution fixed my issue.
To address some of the other questions/comments in this thread, a common problem I've seen is that your number won't verify if you have DCL via Memory disabled for Play Services.
To summarize:
- Enable Phone Number Verification (Settings -> Apps -> Sandboxed Google Play -> Google Settings -> All Services (Top) -> Phone Number Verification)
- Note: Not sure if this one is always required. Someone can try without and report back if they want to.
- Disable DCL via Memory for Play Services
- Set the AOSP/GOS messaging app as your default SMS app
- Clear Google Messages Storage (under storage and cache)
- Give Google Messages it's required permissions (Phone, SMS, Contacts, Network, Notifications)
- Open Google Messages, set as default SMS app
- (Optional) Go back into Google Message's app settings and remove all the extra permissions it just gave itself.
DeletedUser177 This worked for me. holy. What a journey to get it working. Really appreciating you doing the legwork to figure this out.
rebuild3593 this doesn't work for me, tells me the sin wouldn't work. After killing messages and open it again it tells me my device isn't supported.
