I feel politics has no place in open source software or OS's and will always choose to avoid software that mixes politics into their identity, whether directly on their public pages or in their user discussion platforms (official or linked to unofficial forums). It is definitely a major red flag and cause for concern.

Politics has a bearing on every software project, because software is created and used by humans.

Some projects advertise their politics, and some don't.
Personally, I prefer a project that's upfront about their affiliations and ideas.
Not everyone can afford to be ignorant of that.
Helps inform about who to trust, how much, and for what.

You're missing the point. It's not about whether they have or don't have a political stance.

Watermelon I'm not sure the author values the integrity of their app above their political values.

The point is whether they value the integrity of their app over political ideas, or they value political ideas over the integrity of their app. This political banner is an indicator that it's more likely than otherwise to be the latter rather than the former.

not to mention in larger projects that it is usually hangers-on that bring politics to the forefront at the expense of programmers that are skilled at actually getting things done and don't waste their time on the "HR" side of things

the loudest voices for unrelated politics in projects tend to sacrifice the quality and integrity of the software itself in their "more important" quest to cull the contributors involved around the politics they want to promote

I only have two extra apps and download them manually. I keep tabs on them and when an update is available I download it and install it. When I download and install the newer version, there is always a dialog stating do you want to ' update' the app. Click yes and the older version is updated, rather than delete and install.

When google play upgrades something automatically, there is no such confirmation.
There is some convenience when using a trusted app store, you dont have to do manually these things. We'll see if accresent will grow, i hope so at least.

Is there any historical concern around Obtainium or any reason to believe that it could be compromised more substantially or significantly compared to any other Github-acquired APK, irrespective of the decision to put a political button on the Reademe?
