Accessing stuff on WiFi network with no internet while on cullular

I have a Wireless Android Auto dongle for my car. Using it entails connecting to the dongles WiFi and the cars Bluetooth. This works nicely, and my phone is happily connected to cellular data simultaneously.

But to update the software of the dongle, I have to open the dingles IP on the WiFi in a browser, which will then use the cellular data of my phone to fetch updates. But my Pixel 8 Pro refuses to connect to the dongles IP while connected to the cellular network. If I disconnect from the cellular network, the IP loads just fine, but then there are no connection to the internet to fetch updates through.

Basically: How do I connect to an IP on a WiFi network that has no internet access, while being connected to a cellular network with internet access?

Have you tried connecting to the dongle's web server first and then enable cellular afterwards?

Also, are you connected to a vpn?

Yes. It does not work. After reconnecting to cellular, there is no connection to the WiFi network.

I am, Tailscale. But have tried disconnecting that as well. No help there either.

nis Hmm strange. Does the dongle have an ip in one of the private ip ranges (i hope so)?

You could try to replicate the problem by disconnecting your wifi router or an access point from the internet and connect to it's web interface with and without cellular connection enabled. If that show she same behavior my best bet is that it's your cellular provider blocking access to private ip ranges.

What's the IP of the dongle you need to enter? Have you tried to use another phone to see if this works? This would rule out any issues with the server part of the dongle or any issues routing the traffic due to VPN.

Alternatively you could turn off tailscale fully reboot the phone with auto connect set to off and check again then
