Whatsapp restore

It's years ago when I quit Whatsapp, but back then I used to make a local, encrypted backup to a folder of my choice, uploaded this backup to a cloud or my NAS, downloaded it to the new phone and restored Whatsapp. Very simple and the same procedure works also for Signal messenger and others.

anselmschueler temporarily give play services all permissions. Try again. Once connected, revoke the play services permissions you don't actively need.

W1zardK1ng Already tried this. WhatsApp will only restore backups during setup, not later. I do not have the device where the Drive backup was created anymore. I don't know of a way to get the Drive backup as a file. That would be great though.

schklom I only have a backup on Google Drive, and I don't see any option to get the backup as a file.

anselmschueler It does a local backup, then uploads to Google.
I think that in order to have it to local only, you have to reset the app, restore your account, and never select a Google account.

Local backup isn't in a file, it's in the Android/media/com.whatsapp folder.

Just download the WhatsApp folder from Google Drive and then restore that folder to Android/media/com.whatsapp/

anselmschueler if you have spare Android devices, restore it there and create local backup. Personally I'll not give every single permission to play services even if its for a limited time.

anselmschueler I don't know why, but it worked like that for me. Some features of an app might be more relient on play services than others. I guess it is for authorization of WhatsApp to use the google account.

Yup, it's a risk everyone has to personally evaluate if they want to take it.

userofgos The WhatsApp backup isn’t a normal folder on Google Drive. I’m not sure what you mean by downloading it. I wish there was a way to do that but I can’t find it.

I thought there was a way. Do you have a spare Android device? A workaround would be to restore the Google Drive backup on that phone, then do a local backup ans copy that to a USB and then copy it onto your GrapheneOS device

userofgos interesting possibility. I do have an old Android phone, though I wonder if WhatsApp will even run on it… I’ll try it

anselmschueler I also had this issue of it not showing my account. The solution was to give WhatsApp permission to access media when it asked for it (for whatever reason).
