Phone doesn't auto update (Solved - latest release not in stable yet)

Hi guys,

So a new firmware (2022111800) was released recently.

However, my phone still doesn't auto update. When I open the App app and check the Update section it reports all apps are up to date.

App settings are default (Release channel: Stable, Require Battery above warning level is turned off, automatic reboot is turned off)

If I navigate to Settings - System - System Update and tap to Check for updates, it doesn't do anything either.

Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Volen Hey!

The latest release is not in the stable channel yet. It's still in beta.

If you go to Settings > System > System Update and change the release channel there to "beta", it will start the update.

Alternatively, you could wait for beta testing to be finished, and for the update to move to the stable channel, at which point you'll receive it.

For future reference, you can see which version is in the stable channel, and which is in the beta channel in the links below:

It's also important to note that's there's also the alpha channel, in which updates go to before beta. So, if you're not getting an update, don't worry, it likely just hasn't reached your channel just yet. :)

matchboxbananasynergy grapheneOS using the words "released" on twitter is misleading then.. i've always wondered why I got the updates later or the system updater said I was up to date with a manual check when twitter said there's a new version.
Alpha/beta != released
Stable aka production == released
Otherwise it should say "alpha/beta for xx has been released" but using the general word "released" alone means to production aka stable for GOS, literally everywhere else in the entire software industry.

While I understand you may be confused by the phrasing there, I think it actually makes sense for 2 reasons:

Alpha and beta channels in GrapheneOS are not the same as in other projects. Each release is the same, and it just passes through the alpha, then beta and finally stable channel. The only reason for an alpha or beta release to not make it to stable is because of a bug being uncovered during test. This is different in other projects, where the beta channels often includes changes that are there just to test the waters with new features or options without the intention of pushing those changes to stable.
The announcements say that a new version has been released even before that release makes it to the alpha channel, let alone the stable channel. The moment the release announcement is made, the releases are on the website, so that people can download and sideload them, which some may prefer to do instead of OTA updates.
