GrapheneOS supported system languages

Hi, I'm considering using GrapheneOS for my next phone but I haven't been able to find any information on what languages it supports (as in all the system functions like settings etc are in the language). What languages does GrapheneOS support? Aside from English, I'm looking for Japanese, and preferably Simplified Chinese and French support.

In general, the OS supports whatever AOSP does for the most part.

All of the parts that GrapheneOS adds (GrapheneOS-specific settings, for example) are currently only available in English.

Translations of those strings and of GrapheneOS apps is wanted, but it would have to be done in a coordinated way with dedicated teams, not on a "best effort" basis as is done in other projects.

There is also preliminary work that needs to be done to facilitate translations that has not yet been done, so that's another blocker.

I'm curious to know why wouldn't a best effort work here ? We are using this model on Privacy Guides with Crowdin and it works relatively well in my opinion. Either the translated strings are incorporated automatically during each new release, or they could be incorporated manually once everything is completely translated and that enough proofreading was done to meet a quality standard.

Do you now if work is planned to allow the Graphene OS web installer (or website/faq) to be translated ? Since it's a static web page it would be easier to prepare.

Thank you for the detailed reply! Would that mean that if I for example set the system language to Japanese, nearly everything that would be Japanese in AOSP would be in Japanese, and the parts that are English-only wouldn't break and would merely be displayed in English instead?

paolovador The project has very high standards when it comes to translations, so if they were to be done, they'd need to be done "right".

That means that there would need to be dedicated teams, as mentioned above who can produce trustworthy and accurate translations, and every change that required a new string to be translated would need to be translated in all supported language in time for the release. GrapheneOS wouldn't want to leave a string untranslated and push a release regardless.

It is something that as far as I can tell the project wants to do eventually, but it will take a lot of planning, time, resources etc.

Regarding the documentation/web installer, no plans that I know of right now.

matchboxbananasynergy Thanks for taking the time to explain. These standards are indeed high. I'm glad that it follows their stance on the project as a whole. But meanwhile they don't have any language support to help people install the OS on their phone :/. In my opinion even an half baked translation would be better than pure english: I just had to spent an hour to help a friend to translate the instructions. I could have put this hour on crowdin for everyone :). But it's just my opinion.

Anyway thanks @GrapheneOS team for this great OS ! I look forward to see where the project goes !

paolovador It sounds as if the project might accept a volunteer to recruit and manage a translation team. A first step might be talking to a translation manager for some other open source project to get a clear sense of what the position would entail, given the current GrapheneOS release cadence.

I utterly don't know, but I could imagine what is needed is a reasonable Java programmer (for the tech side) with good people skills (for the management side), bilingual, with 10 hours per week, six month minimum commitment. Talking to somebody in the role in some other project would be a step forward from my wild suppositions.
