audio playback stuttering/performance issues

Carlito Thanks for the reply- no I'm not using Android Auto- I'm using a USB-C dongle to wire my phone directly to the AUX audio port in the car. This works perfectly well for the two podcast apps and causes the phone to flip out when playing audio with any other app. So it seems app-specific but unfortunately, the vast majority of apps are problematic. When I connect via Bluetooth, I am connecting directly to the car's bluetooth system, not via Android Auto. The Bluetooth connection immediately fails when I attempt to play audio via all apps with the exception of those two podcast apps where, again, it works perfectly fine. There must be some bug in the most recent build of Android associated with whatever standard means most apps use to play audio. I just wonder if there's some setting in GrapheneOS that I'm not aware of because I can't believe that the bug lies with almost every audio-producing app.

Yes, I've tried this in multiple cars and the result is the same.

This happens on Pixel 6 Pro running GrapheneOS as well.

For me the issue happens when connected to Airpod Pros playing audio through Spotify. It intermittently violently jitters. It would be cool if a GrapheneOS developer could look into it since im kinda worried it hurt my hearing.

I have tried clearing Spotify's cache and storage and also reinstalling the application, I've also tried rebooting the device multiple times and none of these things helped the issue.

I have a similar issue, just using the USB-c jack with a 3.5mm adaptor. Neither Neutron or PCloud player work and the sound runs fast. Any ideas?

I have I think discovered the issue. The USB-C adaptor needs a compatible DAC chip to work. I was recommended to get any with a CX31993 chip. Ordered one and will confirm once received.

The same happens to me with my 2 days old pixel 8A.
I'm using an ISY USB C adaptor wired directly to the Aux port of my car radio. After some minutes playback just stops, even though the app (Spotify) is still playing. Worked fine with my old phone, so I don't think its due to faulty equipment.
I assume it's maybe some kind of buffer filling up, as the problem occurs first after 10 minutes or so. After unplugging and replugging the USB C (and restarting playback) it will work for 1 to 2 minutes and then gradually fail more and more until its complete silence again.

This happens with my 2week old Pixel 8a, with USB-C to jack adaptor when I am listening to any kind of audio/video, spotify.. while I am in underground metro or train.
I thought it might me the adaptor until I see this post here!
I unlpug and replug it works until the next time, having very bad experience with this.
I have not tried to plug USB-C headsphones since I wanted to reuse my old jbl jack headphones.
I ll try with pods or USB-C headphones, but this bothering me since I have to buy theses expensives stuff!!

I found a solution for myself. Hopefully it works for you.

Settings > Connected Devices > Select the options for whatever Bluetooth device you are using > Disable HD Audio: AAC

I have a Pixel 8. In Developer Options, I had turned on "Suspend execution for cached apps" and turned it back off since I was getting 1-2-3 seconds of playback. It works for me now. If I knew what to exclude from that, or how to implement an exclusion list, that would be handy. Whatever handles sound (speaker or Bluetooth).

In general, features in Developer Options are expected to be used by developers on non-production devices during development. Many things there reduce system security, deliberately destabilize apps, or are known to contain bugs.
