  • allowlisting longtime users to edit posts long afterwards?

Hi there. I know you added the very short duration to edit posts in Flarum, to fight spam.

I would be happy if longtime users could be allowlisted to edit their posts.

I like to correct false information afterwards, often only being revealed in the discussion. Would be a good benefit for the forum quality (less wrong beginning posts in a thread)

missing-root I disagree. Long time users should have a better understanding on how to post so the ability to edit the post loses its meaning. If anything, I would give longer grace period to new users. I don't see a purpose in this. We should be all equal and take responsibility for our actions.

We are all equal, longer time users have simply proven they are not bots.

Does Flarum allow 2FA? This could be coupled together.

And as I said, it doesnt have to be because of "bad ways to post". If you have a post that becomes outdated, it is essential to edit that.

On all other forums that use discourse, users with a certain trust level automatically get the ability to edit posts forever. Beginners have a limit like here.

missing-root in the real world you can not unsay what you once said. You can always correct yourself afterwards and that action should be visible to keep the flow and meaning of conversation and to be able to distinguish the changes made. There is already an edit function available in Flarum and its timing is very acceptable. You should always proofread what you post and you are allowed to make further posts as a follow up.

Do you mean the ‘real world’ with its unlimited supply of bad faith?
‘I don’t remember ever saying that.’
‘You’re misrepresenting what I maybe once said.’

What you’re saying is valid, but it’s more relevant for a place like Twitter.

@missing-root’s suggestion could be useful for the few threads or posts that aim to be comprehensive and up to date, like a guide or a summary. For the sake of legibility, it would be a good thing to have some information merged together, at least when it’s from the same author.
Simply going at the end of a thread may not be enough not to miss an addendum, especially if the last messages are digressing.
It’s up to everyone around here, or to admins to decide if this forum shall be closer to a Twitter or to a wiki in its ability to concentrate information.
I agree, however, that it should be faithful to the unfolding of a discussion.

Wouldn’t be possible to only allow the addition of text and possibly applying a strike-through on outdated information?
Or simply an Edit with the date at the end of a given post…

This would have the beneficial effect of reducing the occurrences of reading an old message stating something and having to search for more recent messages explaining it is not true any more. Of course, one has to be diligent to go back, but even if only a small portion does it, it should turn out to be useful.

I’m not sure what equality has to do here, but for sure, we’re not all equal when it comes to reading outdated information.

Yes I am not a fan of a twitter-like style at all. I dont see a reason to defend needing to expect that everything might be outdated, needinf to read through all comments and find relevant stuff.

Also you cannot compare spoken word to written.

Doesnt Flarum support viewing the changes? Discourse does, all changes are visible transparently.
