  • If you haven't switched from the AOSP Gallery app, I highly suggest doing so

I recently fell victim to a very weird AOSP Gallery bug that resulted in all the photos from the Camera folder being deleted. I was viewing a video that I recorded, decided I wanted to delete it so pressed the back button once. Instead of taking me back to the grid of photos and videos in the Camera folder, it brought me to the Album view while still displaying the 'Camera' text at the top left to indicate that I was in the Camera folder. I then held down on the first icon (which I thought was the video I wanted to delete) and pressed delete and confirmed it. When I noticed what has happened (and the deleting dialog staying present), I quickly closed the Gallery app while the deleting dialog was still being displayed. When I checked the Camera folder, all of the photos that I took were gone.

Luckily, barely anything in the Camera album was irreplaceable (I can take pictures of almost all the things again or get very similar photos from family members). I also had copied some of the photos off of my phone for use elsewhere and was able to copy those back manually.

I've since switched to a different gallery application and hid the AOSP Gallery app so this doesn't happen to me again (not sure if I can safely disable it without something else breaking). I also suggest anyone else that isn't already using a replacement for the AOSP Gallery app to use one to avoid something like this potentially happening to you too.

You can disabble it for sure.Dosn't break things.

Perhapse no real bug but a bummer. Reminds us all we should do backus ...

There is also 'Aves Gallery' in Accrescent.

I just switched to Google Photos (which works fine as just a gallery without Google Play Services) and disabled network access for it.

Switch to ENTE.io - and you'll have a great 'gallery' app as well as a secure backup of your photos... great deals going on now

I started using Google Photos with no network access and now I'm using that as well as Ente photos.

The bundled Gallery app provides functionality by responding to various intents that other apps may call. The Compatibility Test Suite includes checks that these intents are handled. Every stock Android OS will handle them.

Most alternative Gallery apps lack the ability to handle all these intents so it may be you have other apps that have broken functionality if you disable the bundled Gallery.

Not sure I have ever seen an app send an intent to view https content in Gallery. That may well be the only reason Gallery has network permission. But there is some chance that some 3rd party app relies upon that for some critical functionality.

It is possible to look at the manifest for an app to see details of all intents it can handle.

I would be curious to see an example of what could break. I disabled the bundled Gallery app from day 1 (replaced with Fossify) and have never encountered any errors. (Not saying it can't happen.)

            So do I.

I mentioned one example already. Its possible for an app to send a VIEW intent for an image which is to be fetched via http or https. Bundled Gallery app will handle this. Fossify Gallery will not.

Another example is Aves gallery not handling any EDIT intents.

Aves will however send an EDIT intent if you try to edit an image. The bundled Gallery app is able to handle that intent.

I feel the Markup app available from the GrapheneOS App Store should really be used regardless if you have the stock Gallery or not

Don' t know if this really breaks things. But good to know.

pml the app is proprietary and very basic. Fossify Gallery, Image Toolbox and "New Gallery" all have the same functionality afaik.

Maybe in a Tablet it works better than the others

missing-root fair criticism. I was just putting it out there as an option

It may not really matter but also could be a problem if an app is trying to show you an image that you need to see for some reason and you cant see it and depending on the context maybe dont even know it was trying to show you something.

That's right. I personally would take the risk but on the other hand I'm fine with this stock gallery. I need no fancy stuff.
