treenutz68 I'm wondering if there are any privacy/security benefits to using the newpipe app (or similar) vs. simply sticking with the brave browser and going to youtube.com there? Thanks!
New2MeOS treenutz68 Bumping this thread. Are you referring to just using the browser or using the browser while signed in? You would have access to play lists there, but ofc you would lose some privacy protections by signing in from your Graphene device via the browser - I presume. Newpipe is okay but if you have a lot of subscriptions every time you open it, prepare to wait a while for each one to update. Then it's hit or miss as to whether or not the video will play. Even with an otherwise solid connection I've had many failures to connect while using Newpipe.
Conjure6589 With newpipe you can manage subscriptions, receive new video notifications, on screen controls for brightness and volume, open YouTube links in the app and manage playlists, all without an account or signing in.
benjistokman Conjure6589 Seconding this. Using an app gives you more features. Notably downloads and background play.
DeletedUser495 New2MeOS few months ago switched from NewPipe to PipePipe. Performs better, give it a try. https://github.com/InfinityLoop1308/PipePipe
New2MeOS DeletedUser495 Looks like it's the exact same interface - what's different about PipePipe? Or is it just faster?
TGOS I recommend Tubular which is a Fork with Sponsorblock. Use it a while now. Not as fast patched as Newpipe but with more features.
zzz New2MeOS PipePipe is a hard fork of NewPipe. https://github.com/InfinityLoop1308/PipePipe?tab=readme-ov-file#about-this-fork PipePipe is updated much more frequently. Usually every 1-3 weeks. In my experience, PipePipe is more reliable. When YT changes its back end in ways that break the alt front ends, PipePipe has been faster to respond and restore functionality.
New2MeOS zzz That may explain why I often get that stupid frown face and no connection using NewPipe. Thought about just throwing in the towel and using YouTube in a separate profile but not sure I want to go that route yet.
blackcat8 Going back to OP's original question, are there any privacy benefits to using one of these apps vs just going to youtube in a browser? Particularly if you don't sign into an account. I understand Newpipe and others offer more features but are they any better for privacy?
raccoondad New2MeOS That may explain why I often get that stupid frown face and no connection using NewPipe Newpipe isn't supported on YouTube, sometimes it doesn't work, sometimes it does.
zzz New2MeOS raccoondad I'd highly recommend PipePipe then! In my light to moderate usage over the last few months, I've never noticed it go down. Compared to NewPipe, in my experience it was down 50%+ of the time I tried to use it.
