4G Calls instantly dropping on Pixel 9

My new Pixel 9 shows "Call Ended" right after starting a phone call. SMS messages and mobile data still work as normal. Phone calls work as normal on stock android, just not on GrapheneOS. Turning off 4G and using 3G calls worked until today, where the service has been disconnected in my country.

de0u Advanced Calling doesn't show up in a search of the settings. Vo5G is on though.

ditzyshale does your carrier support VoLTE? I had a similar problem with mine where VoLTE wasn't enabled on their side, although the provisioned profile thought it was. They fixed it right away, so maybe you should check there too.

I don't have access to a sim from another network but I tried a family member's sim and calls were still dropping. My sim on a different phone was working perfectly, as was my phone on stock android.

Update:
Removing sim card, resetting mobile options, restarting phone, inserting sim card. Phone calls work the first 3-4 times, then go back to dropping instantly. Not sure if this helps.

How old is the SIM card?

de0u At least 10 years. It still works with other phones, even the one I'm having problems with if its on stock android, but with this phone on grapheneos it doesn't. Other family members' sim cards don't work either.

If it's a 10-year-old SIM card I would definitely recommend asking your carrier for a new one. Among other reasons, this will cause them to reprovision the line. That might sound disruptive and might seem as if it can't help, but it has helped other users. Many carriers will issue a replacement SIM card without charge when asked.

Perhaps less disruptive might be briefly borrowing a SIM card from a different carrier, including trying a cheap pre-paid SIM from a convenience store.

I suspect you are from Australia and are making reference to the 3G cellular network retirement.

Who is your cellular provider? eg: Telstra, Optus, Vodafone or one of the MVNO's.
On your GrapheneOS phone go to Settings > Network and internet > Sims > (tap on the sim name) > (scroll down to "Operator settings version"):
(a) What is the version number?
(b) What is the date shown?

I am not a cellular-carrier expert. I wonder if you can find out what the corresponding version is for a device running the stock OS?

Do you remember whether at the end of February they had already announced when they were turning 3G off? My carrier settings are roughly that old, but my carrier isn't in a state of upheaval.

Isent telstra one of the providers in Aus that needs a carrier specific volte modem software. That might be why it works on stock and not on graphene. I'm unsure if grapheneOS / other custom roms can load that?

if thats the case and someone wants to run GOS , they will probally have to port their number to one of the other 2 networks down there that uses the standar volte specification..

its kinda stupid how they implemented volte. and the new regulations blocking phones in australia thats not to spec.

Not sure how hard it would be to load the right modem firmware stuff into GOS but im sure someone here knows

Emergency calling and stuff can worstcase be blocked if your roaming in australia on vacation and you land on the wrong network. (telstra) with the wrong phone.. and i suspect one internation incident from this shit and telstra will be forced to implement the GSMA spec

For australians its even worse but since google pixels supports all bands atleast they wont be blocked. but telstra still needs that specific modem config

EmLeX932 I've seen a video about that and I can't believe that it's actually happening. This must be the biggest cash grab related to phones ever in history. And never let Australia claim they're "green" or whatever, when they willfully decide to make perfectly fine devices obsolete. We are talking multiple thousands, maybe even millions here. When I see these developments, I'm starting to wonder how long it will take until the telcos just take full control and straight up refuse to offer service for alternate OS'es and non-domestic phones altogether. I thought we were through this when the whole SIM- and netlock situation improved, now I guess we're back to square one.

From the Medium article it sounds as if some phones can ship multiple modem firmware images in a single system image. Presumably one or another is activated based on the presence of SIM cards. But it also sounds as if some phones have just one modem image, i.e., it would be necessary to build a special version of GrapheneOS just for Telstra. Either way it sounds like it might not be easy.

At this point I think it might be a great idea to borrow a SIM card from a different carrier, or to pick up a cheap prepaid SIM card that is backed by somebody other than Telstra, just to confirm the situation.

ditzyshale Carriers do not provide modem firmware. It's shipped by GrapheneOS and carriers have no control over it. Not clear what you're referring to but that's not how it works.

I mean I can try a prepaid sim from another network, but AFAIK Telstra owns all the network hardware anyway and other providers are just piggybacking from them.
