Android Auto - Working but are these expected limitations?

Hi,

I've finally got Android Auto working with the non Google travel apps I need after a lot of tinkering and Googling. Android Auto runs in a dedicated profile alone so doesn't live alongside any other apps.

The only issues I have now are:

I can make calls from my car's infotainment system via AA, audio and mic all routed via car, but once the call is in progress, the only way I can end the call is if the other side hands up. During the call, there is no update to the car's infotainment system to show the call is in progress meaning I have no control over the call.
If someone calls me, I can not answer the call as its being routed to the phone's speaker. Even if I answer the phone on the phone itself, the audio is still only routed via the phone. Again, no display on the car's infotainment system to show any call is in progress.

Steps I took to get it working for those it might help

Unplug the phone from your car.
Enter the Car's Bluetooth menu and pair your phone over Bluetooth as normal. Allow the sharing of contacts when prompted.
Open the phone Settings --> Apps --> Sandboxed Google Play --> Android Auto --> Switch on all the permissions switches.
In the same screen, tap Android Auto app info.
Tap Permissons.
Grant permisions to: Call logs/Contacts/Nearby devices/Network/Notifications/Phone/Sensors.
Go back a screen and tap on "Additional settings in the app".
Tick "Start Android Auto while locked".
Tap Customise launcher and tick the apps you want available to you in the car, then drag and drop to get the preferred order.
Change the other settings in this screen to suit your requirements.
Back out of this screen back to the phone's main screen.
Add a widget to the screen for "Settings", and point it at the "Devices" sub menu. This widget is useful for the times where you plug in your phone into the car (not sure how useful this step is for wireless users), and AA fails to launch on the car, it's because the phone has set up the USB connection in the "Charging Only" state but it needs to be in the "File Transfer" mode to interact with your car. This saved me from contstantly having to reboot the phone when this glitch happens.
Scroll to bottom and tap "Version and permission info" 10 times to make yourself a Developer.
Once enabled, check the top right of the screen and tap the 3 dots.
Tap "Developer settings".
Enable Wireless Android Auto and scroll to the bottom. Select "Unknown Sources".
Restart the phone.
At this point, everything is configured, however, it is worth noting that some apps, such as AmiGo that I use as a free non-Google routing app, will not show up in your car's infotainment system unless the AmiGO app is installed via the official Google Play Store app. I'm assuming this has something to do with some form of official app sigs. The same rule however, does not apply to Spotify so who knows.

Hardware/Software version info
Running a Pixel 8 Pro with the latest version of GraheneOS.
Android Auto is the latest version supported by GrapheneOS.
Car: Seat Leon FR 2018 running a MIB2 Infotainment system. Firmware version: 0472 (not the latest but certainly not the oldest).

Tests
I've used a Pixel 4XL with stock AndroidOS to ensure the car's infotainment system was not at fault. Everything (incluing a little extra eye candy) works flawlessly on this phone.

Log File

12:44 - Call from car to target phone. No display on car's infotainment system but call goes through, is answered and audio/mic is routed through car.
12:46 - Call from target phone to car. Call only rings on my phone, not the car and again, no display on the car's infotainment system.

This sounds like you're using a secondary (non-owner) profile and incoming calls won't use Bluetooth. If this is the case, then you're not crazy and there is nothing you can do. It's an upstream Android bug.

guser39 I'm not sure about the other issues you mentioned regarding the inability to end calls and no status information on the infotainment screen.

guser39 This sounds exactly like the issue I'm seeing. Well that sucks a bit. Looks like I'll need to revisit the scope of perms I'm giving AA and run it in the Owner profile. :-(

Awwww maaan, so I won't be able to take calls with my car even just via regular old Bluetooth in non-owner profiles? I haven't gotten around to trying this, I'm still working on other setup stuff.

My owner profile only has my VPN, heliboard, and cheogram installed because I want to keep it as minimal as possible. I'd prefer not to have to switch to it whenever I get into my car.

GlytchMeister See I was happy to switch profiles. The apps I trust live in Owner with all the ones I don't in another, a 3rd profile for apps that won't work without Google Play Servs and a 4th for apps that I want routed through a VPN/Tor.
It would have been a minor inconvinience for me which I was prepared to do if it had worked but I lost 2 evenings of head scratching trying to figure out why this would not work in a non owner profile. When you try to connect to Bluetooth in a non user profile, it kind of connects, mostly with errors but even when you don't see those errors, the car will not route calls through it. So if AA is a req for you, start making plans now around what you're going to activate in what profile to save yourself work down the line.

I've settled on a solution that still needs a litle more finesing but the part of the solution to make this work means giving AA network access which you are unable to remove else AA does not function in the car properly. The way I have gotten aroun this is that I am running Tracker Control for my other apps and I just block AA from getting out to the Internet. It thinks it has the access it needs so works.

My last thing I need to add (which will probably result with a post on here if I can't figure it out), will be a way to scope AA's Storage access and still get the wallpaper on the phone, displayed on the car infotainment system without the need to give AA access to the entire storage of my phone.

On the plus side for you, those steps above should save you a good number of hours of screaming inside a locked car! :-)

AA isn't important, in fact my car can't even do wireless AA, and I don't want to enable USB devices, and AA uses google maps anyway, right? I won't be using that, and I just kinda don't like it...

But taking calls on regular Bluetooth is important. I'll have to see if it will work with my car and cheogram on my non-owner profile, when I get around to it.

GlytchMeister AA doesn't inherently use Maps. It just provides the interface to provide comms to the car's infotainment system. You can use any map app that has AA support.

I've just blocked AA from network access as well as all Google Services so it works, it just can't talk to anyone.

In either case, for what you want, it's Owner profile only by the looks of things.

I'll have to try your suggestions. I'm not using multiple profiles, but I am having the issue where calls use the phone speaker instead of the car's audio system. Very annoying.

Speeduser7533 Sounds like you need to enable wireless comms in AA options as when connected via USB, AA still uses Bluetooth when making calls. Once you enable this option, you can't remove the AA permission to access network so I just block AA access with the Tracker Control app but you can use any app that sinkholes any attempts to get to the Internet.
