A simple and soft method to test would be to clear the app cache.

Clear the app storage then. This will tell you whether the crash has to do with your settings or if the bare app crashes on your system.

schweizer I deleted both the app data and the cache. The app started anew with the wizard. It did not freeze. I was able to set up 2 sync pairs and it is running now.
Do you think that some GOS upgrades could affect it? Because I also noticed that my Bitwarden client and my Aegis app both somehow "forgot" that I would use biometric authentication on them: I was prompted for the password and had to re-enable biometrics.

A couple of hours ago I was at another place, where I was connected to the local WLAN and had my wireguard tunnel running. While being there I cleared storage and cache and set up the folder syncs (3 different ones).
Now I'm back home, internal WLAN (no wireguard) and starting FolderSync just freezes again - also it does not show ANY of the 3 folder pairs I configured a couple of hours ago.

Again, the logs would tell you what the issue is. If I had to guess I would say Wireguard VPN is interferring with the connection. VPN interfers with DNS resolvers and DNS is cached. There are many things that can go wrong here.

schweizer The error logs might be telling something, but in 1.2 MB error log file which is quite cryptic to me (I'm no programmer), I'm not finding anything. Claude suggested it might be related to the Ad banner not loading. But this was not the case after clearing all data and cache from the app.
Regarding the wireguard topic, let's try to analyse it: I defaulted FolderSync app when I was away from home. I was connected to a WLAN and my wg connection to home was up and running. Proof was, that I was able to connect via SMB to my NAS' fileshare. Now being at home and having disabled the wg tunnel, the FolderSync app is freezing. Everything else is working: I can browse the web, connect to my NAS, ect.
I'm open to discuss this wg-tunnel part further, but to me it seems not related at all - or I might not see the relation.

As additional information: when at home, my DNS is my local DNS (172.17.17.218). When abroad and wireguard is connected, the same DNS is being used.

@schweizer did you eventually take a look at the logs I posted in the other thread on Github? If not I can upload them here but I don't know how...

Check that All IP/hostnames + ports are routable inside of wireguard and out.

@schweizer you still did not deliver any details about how you set up FolderSync on your several GOS devices under your supervision. Also, I delivered the logs and probably you didn't look into them.

The above aside, I did following: yesterday evening around 2330 I reconfigured FolderSync (clearing all data/cache). I set up 3 different folder pairs to be synced automatically (scheduled). This morning (6 hours passed between the initial setup) FolderSync would start up, show an empty configuration (no folder pairs) and freeze. I on purpose disabled wireguard-tunnel (as I was at home, my WLAN would be sufficient and also the manual sync worked perfectly).
So I can exclude wg-tunnel I'd say.
What now?

OK - here's an update for the community. Tacit Dynamics replied to me and offered to test with the "testbuild" APK, which does not connect to Google Ads. With this it works flawlessly. Same goes (according to Tacit Dynamics) for the official APK (from their website) as well as the paid "Pro" version on Google Play Store.
I'll buy one license then.

@schweizer you probably forgot to tell us that you're not using the "Lite" version on all your managed devices???

I haven't blamed you for not responding within a few hours (did anybody read that I wanted @schweizer to respond within a few hours?).
I haven't hijacked a thread, as threads do not belong to anyone. Actually I'm helping people facing the same issue OP hat posted about initially: the solution is, in fact, to use the paid version of Foldersync. You could've just written that you are using the same version or the Lite version - both of which would've been technical responses pertinent to the thread. But instead you decided to go whining about how you personally feel. That's your personal business which does not belong here.
The time you spent whining still did not let the technically interested people on this thread (the ones who are facing the same issue and would like to solve it) know about which Foldersync version you're using on all the numerous devices you're managing.

I contributed more to this thread than you did: I have found a solution and shared it with the community. Now go whine about this!

Can confirm the freezing behaviour on latest GOS and Pixel 9 (blocking ads with dns, maybe thats the issue here, if it has to do something with Google ads).

I have a workaround for you, if you managed to setup folder pairs before the app freezes on startup: Create a widget for FolderSync which triggers your wanted sync.
I just had to stop FolderySync and the hit the widget button multiple times and the sync started and finished successfully.

g0mml Thanks for your contribution. The problem is not any ad blocker, as I never used one before yesterday (pi-hole). You can report it to the developers or just buy the licensed version - I understand the devs don't want to fix this issue as it would mean less licenses sold :-)
