RWT What version is GmsCompatConfig? Are you on the latest release?

  • RWT replied to this.

RWT tried to install Android Auto, but keep getting this message...
INSTALL_FAILED_SESSION_INVALID: Installation of com.google.android.projection.gearhead is blocked to prevent breaking gmscompat

Can you say which steps you took when trying to install Android Auto? Here is the relevant information from the web site: https://grapheneos.org/usage#android-auto

RWT my phone says android version 14.

The build number is found in Settings, About phone, at the bottom.

GmsCompatConfig: where do I find this on the phone?

      RWT

how did you try to install Android Auto?

Through Google Play or Through GrapheneOS Apps App?

I read https://grapheneos.org/usage#android-auto and everything seems to be configured ok.

        • Android Auto: all permissions are toggled on except "wireless Android auto" (I only want to use it via USB.)
        • Under App Permissions (Android Auto): All allowed except Calendar and SMS.

          that should be the problem.

On Graphene you need to install Android Auto through the GrapheneOS Apps App as far as I and not through Google Play.

And from what i saw in other threads: Apps work more reliable with Android Auto when they are isntalled with Google Play and not Aurora.

Take my Advice with a grain of salt as I am currently not using Android Auto myself, its just things I read on this forum regarding Android Auto so far.

I've never heard of a "GrapheneOS Apps App", is that really a thing? and if so, where do I find it?

              RWT

              it is preinstalled on GrapheneOS

I checked its called App Store. Here a screenshot of the icon: https://imgur.com/0zsJNrA

you also install Google Play and Play services with that App.

make sure to uninstall the Android Auto installed with Aurora before installing it with the App Store app :-)

I am not sure but I believe some apps need to be installed with the Google Play store and not Aurora to work with Android Auto. I dont have any first hand Android Auto experience yet as my current car is too old to have any kind of Android Auto device installed.

RWT In your list of apps, there is an app called App Store. You must install Android Auto from here. As @Aeon said, this is likely the reason.

RWT Did you uninstall the version from Aurora Store and install it from App Store?

RWT Android Auto: all permissions are toggled on except "wireless Android auto" (I only want to use it via USB.)

OK, but the directions say clearly:

For some cars, baseline permissions for wireless Android Auto are needed even when using wired Android Auto. Therefore, if wired Android Auto is unable to connect to the car with only wired permissions granted, try granting wireless permissions instead.

Android Auto is a complicated piece of software. It may not work even if all of the directions are followed, but the likelihood goes down if they aren't.

So after uninstalling and installing through the grapheneos app store, using wired and Bluetooth connections I am back to where I started. google maps, and phone are working and display on the vehicles interface, but with spotify only sound comes through. looking into the settings I can see an option to select apps in android auto, and spotify is not listed or an option to add. so at this point I'm going to give up. I can hear music, but I have to use my phone to control the play. I guess this is just the way it is.

                    thanks for your help!

To permit Android Auto to sideload apps, you need to enable the Developer Settings of Android Auto (not the phone) and allow AA to load apps from Unknown Sources.

                    Here is a step-by-step guide.

                    1. Setting initial permissions
I believe you already set the permissions right from Settings ➔ Apps ➔ Sandboxed Google Play ➔ Android Auto.
                    2. Enabling AA Developer Settings
Settings ➔ Apps ➔ Sandboxed Google Play ➔ Android Auto, on the bottom of the screen click "Version" 10 times. This will enable "Developer Settings".
                    3. Enabling "Unknown Sources"
Now you have "Developer Settings" for Android Auto enabled, you can access it from the top right menu (3 Dots). Click on "Developer Settings", scroll down, and find "Unknown Sources". Enable it and restart the phone.

Now you should have access to the missing apps.

dr-evo could you provide a screenshot for item 2 in your three steps guide? I can't seem to find the AA version that I should tap 10 times.

Stephan-P I can make the screenshot guide tonight or tomorrow but I realized I made a mistake on Step 2. It should have been:

                        1. Enabling AA Developer Settings
Settings ➔ Apps ➔ Sandboxed Google Play ➔ Android Auto ➔ Android Auto settings (very first option)
If you scroll all the way to the bottom you'll see "Version". Click on it 10 times. (After the first click it should change to "Version and permission info"). This will enable "Developer Settings".

Let me know if this solves your problem. Otherwise, I'll do my best to post the screenshot guide as soon as I have a little more time.
