Include Google Maps as an optional install in the App Store?

I was thinking that since you have Android Auto and Google Markup, it would be easy to include Google Maps in there? It is really the only app (pretty much) that I install Google Play for. I would love to install just Google Maps from the App Store and use it without an account and without the overhead of Google Play Services.

Since Google Maps requires GPlay, this is not possible and adding it to the App Store would serve no point.

AlanZ I just installed Google Maps from Play Store, pushed it from Owner to a profile without Play Services, was able to open it from within that profile but no map would load. As soon as I installed Play Services in that profile, the maps loaded without issues.

Is it possible that you have an older version of Google Maps installed?

I have used it just fine without Google Play installed, so it is very much possible.
But I had to download it from a place like apkmirror, which is not ideal.

Dumdum it would serve the point of being able to download and use it without having to make a google account for play store, or using a 3rd party app store. Why else is Android Auto included, for instance?

App Store handles dependencies already, so it could just enforce Play Services to be installed alongside it.

AlanZ They might have changed the dependency (again). I will have to check this very soon. Up until very recently, they'd switched to requiring Google Play to work.

This doesn't have the full functionality as a full Google Maps install, but there is GMaps VW which a restricted WebView wrapper for accessing the web version of Google Maps and a few other perks when copying locations into other OpenStreetMap navigation apps (e.g. OSMAND+)

Why should Google Maps have priority here over other highly popular apps that are obtainable from the Play Store?

Yes, I just checked, it doesn't work for me either anymore. I guess it has been awhile since I tried to use Google Maps without Google Play. My bad.

Aurora Store is a hacky solution and its days may be numbered. I should have checked before making the claim that Google Maps works without GPlay. At any rate, I will keep installing both, not a big deal.

If anything, this is an argument to put an older (and still working) version of gmaps into gosapps. The newest working version is 11.111.0202.

secrec Adding an old version that is not guaranteed to work in the future and may have security vulnerabilities compared to the latest version would not be good for the end user.
