Newpipe and its forks (my favorite is Tubular) are great but are currently all broken due to Google's anti-adblock shinanigans. Fixes are on the way, but there is currently no ETA.
Your options are:
- YouTube Revanced, which is a patched version of standard YouTube without ads and includes Sponsorblock and Return YouTube Dislikes. Allows background play and Picture-in-picture. It's still basically YouTube though, so you'll still be tracked by Google.
- YouTube through browser. If you use YouTube through a browser like Firefox or its forks (I recommend Mull from F-Droid) you can install the Ublock, YouTube HD, Background Fix, and Sponsorblock extensions to give you a solid YouTube experience. Also allows background play and PiP. Again, you're still technically using OG YouTube, so Google will track you.
- Clipious, an Android front-end for Invidious available on F-Droid. This is what I am currently using until Tubular is back up. Instead of sending requests directly to YouTube, you're pulling content from instances/servers setup by volunteers. It has all of the features I mentioned before but they work... slightly worse. 😅 But they work and the increased privacy is appreciated.
I might be missing a few options, but I think these are currently the most viable for a decent YouTube experience at the moment.
Edit: GrayJay seems to be a solid option, but I haven't tried it yet. At the moment, I am content with Clipious even though it's a tad janky at times. Lol.
