Pixel 6a connected to VW through USB-C cable and I can't play any audio. I've tried Simple Music Player from F-droid and Poweramp but nothing will play. It just plays through the phone speakers.

In Connected devices I click to allow data transfer through the USB but that doesn't work.

It seems like playing audio through a cable would be something simple and basic so perhaps I'm missing something.

I don't have android auto installed and would prefer not to use it. My car doesn't have an AUX input, only 2 USB-C ports and I've tried both of them.

viper Maybe check the owner's manual? Maybe the car does not export a USB audio endpoint, and expects to use the USB-C port to read music out of a FAT32 file system?

Do other phones (without Android Auto) play audio via the car speakers? How about a laptop?

de0u I was able to get it partially working. It turns out I can't control anything from my phone and I have to use the car's touch screen. It reads my filesystem on the phone and I can select what to play only on the car's touch screen. I can't control anything from any of the apps on my phone.

Is there a way around this so I can control audio from the phone itself?

I think it might be productive to see whether the car's documentation, or online forums for the specific car, shed light on this. There is no general technique for making the car do something that it doesn't contain software to do.

de0u I read through the manual but it didn't have any useful information. I can check out the forums for my car.

I also have this problem with my 2023 VW and have not been able to find a solution. The Bluetooth in the car is only SBC and horrible compressed audio. So I want to plug in, but can't. It might be related, but in a desperate effort to get the audio working by a wire, I installed Android Auto and tried to connect that way. Other normal phones can connect to Android Auto through wire or wireless, but my graphene pixel fold cannot. Is there some kind of protective setting enabled that would prevent the phone from transmitting the audio signal to another device? I don't have this problem when I use a USB DAC on the phone to headphones.
