Using RCS with Google Messages on GrapheneOS

So my individual 1:1 chats work with RCS just fine. But, none of my group messages are working with RCS. I can only send and receive them as MMS. Sometimes they don't come through at all.

I've triple checked that all group members have RCS enabled and that it functions normally on their ends. I've uninstalled google messages and reset RCS multiple times with the same results.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Anyone know how to fix it or at least what's causing it?

Hi, I tried for probably more than a week to get RCS to work, and the old Messages app was the ticket! I downloaded the APK bundle and had to install the APKMirror Installer to do it, but as soon as I did that, the RCS connection was instantaneous, and I've since updated to the latest version. It still works!

I think it's got to be a change in later versions that broke the setup. Intentional or not. I wouldn't put it past Google to do that though to try to keep users on official firmware.

Brainstorming here: has anybody thought to check the flags in debug mode for Google Messages to see if one of them which has to do with RCS setup is switched off? I try and tinkering with it upon a time but don't understand a whole lot of it.

bigdata I was about to answer "No" when I remembered that I had. I allowed GMS to "READ_DEVICE_IDENTIFIERS" detailed in another post. Now, was that the real issue? Not sure. I tried so many different things before trying the older version of the Messages app.

I switched from a Pixel 8 to a Pixel 9 Pro this weekend. When I activated the 8 (about 300 or so posts ago), there were no issues, didn't have to do anything with adb or other apps, just granted permissions to Play Services and Carrier Services. Not sure how long it took to activate.
9 Pro has been "Setting Up, Trying to verify phone number" since last night. So either I'm par for the course, or I'm going to have to get under the hood more than I'd like. Frustrating to say the least.

installing this old version it instantly allowed rcs. then i updated messages via the play store. still working. now i need to remember all of the permissions i granted trying to get this working.

kinghat worked for me as well, although I have some messages that are not delivering for some reason.

kinghat Probably a dumb question, but how did you update? If I downloaded the older version for apk mirror to get it working, can I just go into the playstore and install the latest version with the old one still installed?

Predefine8310 I was able to just go to the Play Store and update. No fuss no muss.
It looks as though someone needed to install the Play Store version to another profile to get the update to trigger though

Interesting, I am not sure, but I think just using the old Google Messages will work now, adb not being needed. I wish I could find someone to try this without doing the whole adb to confirm my suspicions.

5rlyn Are you on an att network by chance? I got it working on a tmobile mnvo, but then switched to att and tried everything but its stuck on verifying

Eureka! The ADB commands and some of the other suggestions in here may have finally got this working. Since I last attempted it I had upgraded to the Pixel 9 Pro XL. For reference I'm connected to Dark Star (ATT) on US Mobile. Never could get my Pixel 8 to work. I finally decided to try moving from Stock OS to Graphene early this morning. Based on my notes I did things in this order:

Installed GrapheneOS
Added Google Play, Google Play Services, and configured them.
Installed Google Messages from Play Store
Ran the ADB commands to allow device identifiers
Made the account changes for phone verification and gave Messages all the necessary permissions.
Setup Messages. RCS initially said my SIM wasn't supported.
Rebooted. Now RCS indicates it's setting up. It sat there for a couple hours.
Rebooted again, and still no movement, just setting up.
Set the old Messages app as default, cleared Google Messages app data and cache.
Gave Google Messages all the permissions and turned on exploit protection compat mode.
Setup Messages again. RCS indicates an incompatible SIM.
Rebooted. Opened the app and RCS was connected. And unlike my Pixel 8 Pro it is actually connected and working as it should.
Keep fingers crossed it won't stop working in a week. I'm almost afraid to reboot. LOL

Hope everyone else is lucky enough to make it work. Maybe not all these steps are are required, but that's how I managed to get it to work. May the force be with you!

Spent hours reading this thread and a couple others on this forum. I also spent all day googling rcs. I am stumped and frustrated with this issue. On OTA OEM android 15 pix9pro I never had issues. I would occasionally clear cache and files from google play, and it would break, I would just re-add the permissions and rcs would come up.

I have been stuck on "setting up" since yesterday night/early this morning when i finished flashing. I have done pretty much all the options listed here, but will try the steps listed by gheylien
T-mo, post-paid (grandfathered) plan, oem unlocked pix9 pro bought from google direct brand new.

I love the piece of mind that blocking almost everything goog brings, i just need to get this damn thing working and i'll be happy as a clam.

RCS is still stuck at "Trying to verify your phone number..." With rooted graphene on 8 pro. Even with all permissions for play services, carrier services and messages. Device identifiers set with app ops and verified with adb/aShell. Reboot in between each step with version 242499063 with cleared storage. If anyone has any other idea, I'm all ears!

EDIT: cant find "August 2024 version code 242499063" of the APK, Anyone have a link to it? For whatever reason it wouldnt let me edit my post above.

Using the Aurora store is simplest. After installing Aurora Store if its not installed already and giving it necessary permissions to install apps, search for Google Messages in it.

Instead of clicking install, click Manual Download. Enter: 242499063

It might bug out. Give it some time to work or keep trying until it successfully downloads it. Enable notifications for aurora store to see progress.

Make sure you uninstalled newer version of Google messages on all profiles first or the install will fail.

DirtyDan I am using a Pixel 6 with an AT&T SIM. Unfortunately, on the provided version number, it States that RCS is unsupported
(when I was very clearly able to use RCS prior to my switch over to Graphene)
