  • Using RCS with Google Messages on GrapheneOS

grittytea Bottom line - if you're on Verizon it's a hassle right now without granting Play Services the READ_DEVICE_IDENTIFIER permission via AppOps or ADB

I dont think that's correct as I'm on Verizon and did not have to do that; I didnt have to do anything special - installed GOS on P9Pro XL, installed G dependencies, granted permissions it asked for, installed G messages - RCS activated immediately and has been on ever since (couple of months)

grittytea I have been using RCS on 8Pro Verizon with no issues. No special permissions, or work around needed. Only stops working when revoking network permission from messages app. Your situation seems to be isolated and nothing to do with Verizon.

Anyone know if you have to have Google Messages set up on the owner profile for it to work? I can only get close to have it working on the owner profile. The other user profiles do not seem to work at all for RCS support.

has anyone had a decline in the ability to send messages via browser recently? I use the QR code to text via computer, but lately, I often have to unlock my phone and open the Messages app to send/receive new messages.

It's as if the connection breaks and I have to re-engage it.

I am not sure, as when I tested it a long time ago it would not. I would suggest making sure Google messages is on both profiles and registing on the owner profile. Try to run it on the secondary profile...

Or you can register on the owner profile and then register Beepers RCS Bridge and push the beeper app to the secondary profile and log in. You would just have to turn off notification for Google messages on the owner profile

FYI, the new beta version of messages is offering me dual sim registration now. Both are still "setting up" status for me, but maybe dual sim RCS will work for others?

OfflinePuffin Alright. I must just keep my normal number on my "work" phone then. Use that for calls, texts, and contactless payments. Then just use GrapheneOS phone for everything else.

the message will be sent when ... will be online ... this is the message I have .. and impossible to find a solution despite the uninstallation of the application and reinstallation ... I know that this is not a specific problem of grapheneos .... but if someone could help me it would be very appreciated

Just reporting that it randomly started saying connected after reinstalling beta Messages. I did nothing else other than that. I was trying to get Beeper working but it won't connect to Messages. In trying to do that I reinstalled Beta messages and it magically worked... Will report back if it disconnects. I'm on Verizon using a physical sim

Hymix can you send over some screen shots? Also dose it work with a person on Google messages or iPhone?

thed0ctor just posting im still connected. This is the longest it's gone being connected.

grittytea Thank you for your comment! After much much grief, thanks to your comment I was able to get RCS working with AppOps. I gave Play Services the READ_DEVICE_IDENTIFIER permission, and the SEND_SMS permission (though I don't know if that was necessary), 2. disabled and reenabled RCS chats, it set up almost immediately, 3. then still could not use RCS with contacts, but after I restarted the phone and then it finally worked and offered RCS instead of SMS.

I don't have it installed, and no desire to reinstall it.
It's available for android and iOS, and needs both Android and iOS users to have it installed in Japan because RCS hasn't been activated by the carriers (for IOS) here in Japan outside of this app.
It won't send to people on google messages, either.

            5 days later

Twice now after GrapheneOS updates, I lost the ability to send Google messages thru my laptop unless my phone was unlocked & had Google Messages open. Definitely an irritation..

I thought GOS updates were rolling back functionality, but after resolving the issue just now, I now believe that after GrapheneOS finishes 'optimizing apps' post-update, the phone just needs an additional reboot for Google Messages to work as expected.

Sharing this in case it saves someone from similar frustration.
