Using RCS with Google Messages on GrapheneOS

aaravchen I'd be curious to know if waiting up to 30 minutes would make a difference. Are you in a position to give that a try?

Otherwise, I suspect the issues an increasing number of us are facing may not be surmountable without guidance and/or solutions from the GOS devs (though, for clarity, it isn't a mess they've made).

Not diagnostic, but I tried unsintalling my current (latest, working) version and without rebooting I installed the old version from your method. I then did the data clear and setup dance, verified RCS showed Connected, and then upgraded to the apk bundle. Etouffee lists as true now on that bundle.

Next time it stops working I'll try for ypur method with a longer wait before giving up on the apk bundle version.

Just installed GOS, decided to install GPS and Google messages.

Gave the following permissions
GPS
-call logs
-contacts
-network
-phone
-sms

Google messages
-camera
-contacts
-microphone
-music and audio (with storage scopes)
-network
-notifications
-phone
-Photos and videos (with storage scopes)
-sms

I then inserted my sim, set up messages, rebooted my phone and was connected immediately. Tested to see if RCS was working with my partner and there were no issues.

Can someone explain to me how to check Etouffe status?

I'm trying to help diagnose why my RCS messages started failing on Friday (like others). I'm on AT&T, have been showing RCS connected and working previously but all RCS messages fail now. I ran through a remove and reinstall roughly following the recent T-Mobile instructions, have no problem getting reconnected but as of yet no RCS messaging back. Currently updated to latest version of messages, still shows connected.

You unlock the Debug menu by starting a new conversation with *xyzzy*, which will pop up a Toast telling you Debug is enabled, and add the Debug option to the pop over you use to reach settings.
From that debug menu, you pick RCS -> Report RCS Connection State. The Etouffee status is listed at the bottom of the pop up.
This Debug -> RCS -> ... menu item is no longer present on Google Messages app versions starting with sometime around early November tjough, and there is no other place to get tjis information.

jumpdeer I had this happen one two of devices—one when I tried updating and another just stopped working. If you haven't already try turning off then turning on RCS and wait 30 minutes then reboot. Revoke the permissions for Play Services and then enable them again, do the same for RCS. If that doesn't work, try installing a older version before the one you had installed but DO NOT update the app. At least for me when I tried I ran into the same issue, but was able to get RCS working on that device this morning. I'll test it more once I get home from work. I haven't had any issues on my main Pixel 7 Pro though. RCS has been working with no issue since I downgraded and installed the older version still on 2024070803_RC04.

Unfortunately just tells me what I assumed and etouffee is false. I ran through another couple remove and reinstalls, with various older versions. Normal process of getting RCS to connect with an older version then that's where it stops. Tried the previously mentioned newer old version to update to, no change.

Sure seems like whatever at&t just did broke it for me. I would glad to share all the data I can if it helps somebody solve this.

Just did a fresh install of GOS and got a new Esim, and RCS is still not working for me either. Though, it never says connected. I've been stuck Connecting... for the past 30 minutes.

I just lost RCS about two days ago as well on Visible wireless. In Debug, my Connection State is "CONNECTED", and RCS State is 0. I feel like this is something Google has done :).

RazTheCat just a bit of insight I just gained.

This is my "report multi RCS sim connection state" that just started working.

SIM ID:
	RCS Connection State: CONNECTED
	Transport: Tachygram

RCS state is showing 0, so that's not necessarily a negative indicator like etoffee: false was.

I don't know what is going on but I just now got a ton of RCS messages out of the blue. The only thing that I see that happened was the GPS crashed a minute or two before they all came in.

Ky1r0y same with me. RCS is working again. FWIW I got a message on my phone about 30 minutes ago that was google verifying my device, so its possible there was something changed in their end making it work again.

Literally just happened to me too without doing a reboot or anything on T-Mobile. Oddly, it still says "RCS chats are not supported on this device" in RCS settings.

I guess we are all back. My RCS messages came in about 3:15 EST. On AT&T, latest version messages. Been RCS connected since yesterday evening.

And then, randomly 5 days later I recieved RCS messages, and I'm able to send them too.

That RCS State is not equivalent to Etouffee.
When I realized the app had dropped the other RCS Connection State option from the Debug menu, I went looking to see if anthing else indicated the same thing. I looked at that RCS Status specifically both whenEtouffee was true and false. It always said 0 for me. In fact nothing I could find in any of the Debug menus tracked with the Etouffee value.

Mine just started working as well, for about 30 minutes I got a bunch of RCS messages that were sent earlier in the day. Since switching to GOS a couple days ago, RCS has shown connected the whole time but hadnt worked until now
