Using RCS with Google Messages on GrapheneOS

Have you been able to maintain connectivity for longer than 24-36 hours. My RCS has been breaking after about 24 hours on the latest build on my Pixel 9 on Mint Mobile.

When its broken, it goes into "Connecting...."

My steps to fix (has worked the past 3 days every time):

Uninstall Messages
Install 242499063 from Aurora
Set Permissions: Contacts, Network, Notifications, Phone, SMS
Open and verify RCS is set back to Connected
Update to latest version from Aurora
Restart my Pixel 9
Open Messages and RCS is good to go

I used to be able to just stay on 242499063 but I cant get RCS to work, it will connect but refuse to send any messages as RCS.

If anyone has a solution that prevents the 24-36 hour timeout, i'm all ears!

andrew Please read some of the messages just 5 or less back.

Only T-Mobile has this problem (Mint=T-Mobile), it's not solved, and GOS knows about it and is working on it.
You lose RCS very 24-36 hours and have to uninstall, re-install one of a few older versions, activate RCS, then upgrade to bring it back.

aaravchen It's not just T-Mobile. I'm on Spectrum Mobile, which uses Verizon. Same issue.

I'm on Mint Mobile. I installed messages.android_20241120_00_RC07.phone_dynamic versionCode 262371063 on October 13th and RCS has been functioning for me ever since. I won't upgrade until the issue is solved.

alwarnecke I was repeating what GOS has been saying, and what everyone else has been reporting.
That said, it's just been a matter of time before other carriers start having the same problem, since carriers themselves are now running the RCS servers instead of Google (which is what caused the global RCS outage on Sept 19th). T-Mobile was just the first to switch to their own server hardware instead of continuing to use and manage Google's (or something like that).

GrapheneOS I am okay with adding a toggle to simply get this working until another solution is found that is more permanent and baked into the OS.

WestQuester Same (though not 100% on the date itself). I appreciate and respect GOS saying they don't want to compromise, but RCS is simply too much a part of my day to day now for me to go back or use a Messages version that boots me off every day and a half.

Thank you so much for this. 50 hours and counting, RCS still going strong. I installed the bundle with APKMirror, working great.

gos27371 Update for me, switched to US Mobile from Mint Mobile and all is working again with 0 workarounds needed.
Using latest version of Messages.

Same here. Didn't do anything special aside from switching carrier and network. Simply installed Messages from Play Store and RCS works. It survived one update to Messages so far, waiting to see what effects Play Services updates might have.

gos27371 What network are you using on US Mobile?

I've tried the Warp (Verizon, used to work, now doesn't) and Dark Star (AT&T) which has never worked. I am a USM user and I am unable to get it working again.

EDIT: I have 2 lines on my phone right now, using each network. I didn't try Light Speed (T-Mobile) because it was reported that T-Mobile all around was having issues.

EDIT 2: When did you switch from Mint to USM? I wonder if the 24-36hr window hasn't hit you yet.

I did make sure to disable RCS on Mint before switching. Not sure if or what that would have affected.

Not sure if it mattered but I thought having RCS off before switching was a good idea also. During my last couple weeks on Mint I was using SMS and not with Google Messages.

Can you share your app versions and such for me to compare?

I have one line on Warp and one line on Dark Star - one of the lines isn't showing up at all for RCS activation in the app, and I haven't been able to reconnect since a few weeks back when I was successful on Warp.

Started with 20251009_00_RC00 which updated to 20251031_01_RC05 a few days ago.

So one of those lines needs to have an eSIM. Have you tried the Warp card from their SIM kit?

Messages is 20251031_01_RC05 installed from play store.

I have a free trial plan on US mobile that explicitly states RCS support. I will switch to the Starter plan after that, which should also support it.

Are you using the pooling system? I wonder if something is different with that setup?
Let me know if you need anything else.

gos27371 No, standard plan on USM. Can use whatever networks I want. I am on the Unlimited Premium so I have zero restrictions.

I will try and see if I can get the version over Aurora and see if it kicks in. The standard app from the store is what is installed now, and isn't working.

ralm Both lines are eSIM. I've also tried the SIM cards as an alternate as well.

No activation lol. I've ran the gamut. That's what floors me that you both are having no issues.
