Vanadium cannot access saved passwords

Based on additional testing, it seems that reverting the upstream flag that regressed this functionality does restore saved passwords, so we should be able to provide an update that gives people all of their previously stored passwords back.

What remains to be seen is what will be done going forward, seeing as this functionality will be moving away in a few months, it seems, in favor of a Play Services dependent implementation.

Unbelievable, in other words, Google wants to take control of our password management? Thus, when u don't install the Play Services you won't be able to store passwords within Vanadium/Chrome in the future? Glad, you can switch to 3rd party pw manager. Even when my pw´s will return, I´ll wipe them and use KeePassDX instead from now on.

Andorid you pinged me about switching to keepass in the other thread, i just wanted to follow up and say vanadium is the one app that gives me keepass issues. for some reason it thinks all vanadium webpages are the same and autopopulates the same user details each time. that's only reason i use vanadium's built in in the first place 😭😭

So if I'm understanding this correctly, Google is removing the option to store passwords within the browser, and replacing that functionality with the Play Services-dependant, cloud-synced service called "Google Password Manager"? Wild.

You should always have backups of passwords and Google's developments show that if you don't have backups yet, you should act now.
There is Keepass with Nextcloud integration
I have important passwords on OnlyKeys and as a long-term backup for PW, GPG and SSH I have 2 Signet HC. (Can import .csv file.)

Keepass, Bitwarden, 1Password etc. can also export all .csv files. Encrypted with GPG, these are good long-term backups.

This is fixed by Vanadium 126.0.6478.50.1 which is now available in the Stable channel. We had to revert back to the previous behavior, which they've deprecated and plan to remove. We need to reach out to them about it and convince them not do that or it's going to be a maintenance burden for us.

What are other Chrome based projects doing? They're affected as well I guess, maybe a common effort might find a common solution that every project can benefit from.

The configuration has been restored back to using the built-in password manager so it can access the passwords which were already there. Everyone will be able to use all the passwords they had before this change.

Unfortunately, this issue was not reported while the new Vanadium release was in the Alpha and Beta channels of the app repository. We got feedback from multiple people that it was working well, and it moved along to the Stable channel. We do not have nearly enough people helping with Alpha and Beta testing for Vanadium and the other apps in our app repository. There are a lot of people helping with the OS, not enough, but far more than the number of people helping test the app releases. Issues like this reaching the Stable channel can be avoided if there are more people helping to test the releases in Alpha and Beta.

itsjpb Join the alpha/beta testing chat rooms on your chosen platform (Discord, Matrix, Telegram). There are callouts and pings there when new releases of the OS or apps come out and you can report issues there.

To use a 3rd party PW manager you need to disable password storing in Vanadium an enable usage of 3rd party managers and in device settings enable auto fill for your PW manager. Im using KeepassDX and works pretty well. Managing PWs this way may ease transitions to new phone and PW backups. For a beginner it's a good starting point to learning how 2 use PW managers.

The issue described above (vanadium not offering to save password) now happens on my Pixel Tablet. Strangely, it's working well on my P8.

I'm in beta channel for vanadium.

Just two days ago I installed grapheneOS on a new device, and whoops, vanadium also didn't ask me any longer if it should store my credentials. Turns out, that I didn't understand that in the settings->autofill section I need to choose 'Autofill with Google' to enable this. This didn't seem to me very intuitive, since I'm not using the Google password manager nor (original) Chrome, but checking this option did the job. Hope this comment helps other innocent users like me :-)
