The details depend on which country you're in. In the U.S. it's safest to not buy the device from any carrier, period. Absolutely do not buy a device from Verizon or a secondhand device that has Verizon software on it. Regardless of your contract status it will not be possible to install GrapheneOS on such a device.

akc3n Yes, most will work. Some may be problematic, while others might be not compatible due how the developers implement certain features of the Play Integrity API.

The Apps I am most concerned about not working are banking apps lke Revolut, Telda, etc since I heard normal apps work normally, I think I should keep my other phone as backup for those sorts of apps just incase.

No. It's not supported as it destroys the android security model and is no longer GrapheneOS.

Well I mean yeah fair enough but can't you sandbox that still? I am not talking about actual access just in a way that the app thinks it does? OR maybe is there a way to enable it just for apps that need it?

I can confirm Telda works perfectly on GrapheneOS, with or without Sandboxed Google Play. Google Play is needed for the initial sign in to send the SMS message to your number but then Google Play can be deleted if you want. Please note that you will not be able to receive notifications on Telda unless Google Play is installed.

shimmeringsquirrel The things you listed will all work. The Google services compatibility layer supports most functionality, but there are a few exceptions. Screen mirroring does not work. Tap to pay with payment apps like Google Pay does not work. Apps that use the Play Integrity API may refuse to work on GrapheneOS. GrapheneOS fulfills all the security properties of the stock OS. The Play Integrity API however only verifies devices running on the stock OS. This is mostly used by some banking apps and pure security theater. You can find a list with the compatibility of banking apps here: https://privsec.dev/apps/banking-applications-compatibility-with-graphheneos/
GrapheneOS has some security features that can rarely interfere with apps such as blocking native code debugging (also used by some apps like some banking apps as security theater or as a weak attempt to hide what they do from you). You can disable these in the settings on a per app basis. Generally 99% of apps will just work. But be aware that things can change in the future and Google might add functionality to Google services that apps might decide to depend on and which GrapheneOS cannot or will not support. But you can go back to the stock OS anyway.

shimmeringsquirrel Make sure you get a device with an unlockable bootloader. Carrier locked devices may have a bootloader that cannot be unlocked. These are sold as part of phone plans. If you buy a new device without a contract the bootloader will be unlockable. On the second hand market these devices can mix. After carrier locked devices have been paid off they may get carrier unlocked but the bootloader can remain locked. Those devices might be sold as unlocked but their bootloader may not be unlockable. If you buy used make sure the device is truly unlockable or you have the option to return the device.

If I buy one it will probably be from germany and without a phone plan, if I go into a phone store (new) is it unlocked. Also, if I decide to buy a used phone, how can I check if the bootloader is unlockable.

Tiktok is a massive multi billion user platform. Like it or not, thats a good place to operate for a substantial portion of businesses.

I believe the questions were factually answered by akc3n, further discussion is getting out of control. Everyone has personal motives for what they are doing. Just to add from security and privacy perspective, you can't go wrong installing GrapheneOS, unless you are using a small subset of apps that do not play well along with this environment.
