  • When / why use F-Droid -vs Aurora store?

I want to install the Aegis 2FA app on my phone. I see it's available from both F-Droid and the Aurora store.

As a rule, apps from F-Droid are the most privacy focused, followed by the Aurora store? If so, then you'd always want to find a suitable app on F-Droid and then choose the Aurora store as a last resort. Is that an accurate statement?

Thank you,
Ed

O.K....I guess I'm missing your point.

If you tap on the source code link on FDroid, guess where it's gonna lead you and it's not Play Store... I download and update all my apps manually. You can keep an eye on updates with apps like Obtainium or ReadYou.

I prefer to get the apk of an app if possible. Like @[deleted] mentioned, you can get Aegis from github.

You can always go to the website of the app you are interested in to see if they offer it in apk format. If it is not there it might be on github. Otherwise some sort of store is your only option. All the apps I have came from their apk, either from the apps official website or github. The only store I hope to use will be Accrescent.

[deleted] I would like to be able to use Accrescent also but for the two apps I may be using from it, it's not a solution for me. Too barebones.

I agree. That's why I'm hoping more projects get on there in the future. I would love to rely on it.

I'd always prefer F-Droid to the Play Store (or Aurora) if possible. There's tons of malware on the Play Store that gets detected way too late, while F-Droid at least has a second pair of eyes as the F-Droid maintainers build the app themselves from the source code rather than just distributing the binary they get from the developer.

Also you don't need a Google account to use F-Droid.
