User2288 connecting my laptop to Bluetooth and walking around the house with the Gryphon, also having the phone not tied to the Gryphon by a short USB cable when out and about. It would be less of an issue with a small device like an iFi GoBlu, but the Gryphon is a way better DAC/amp than something like the GoBlu, and it is about the size of your phone! Its not as fun having your phone tied to it with a short USB cable (and all the good OTG USB cables are short). Much better to have the phone tied to nothing and the DAC/amp stay in your pocket, with its large volume wheel that can be easily used to control volume, or clicked to skip songs and start and stop playback.
The Gryphon is an $800 Canadian DAC/amp. Its fantastic, but large. I also have an iFi Gold Bar, which is nice and small and a joy to have tied directly to my phone. However it drains the phone's battery for its power, so if I'm going out for a longer while I may want to bring the Gryphon with its own built-in battery to power the headphones so my phone battery isn't drained.
A question; why Bluetooth headphones if they are always on your head and your phone in your pocket? Why not ditch them and go for wired if they are almost always in such chose proximity? I can't think of a time when you can't have your phone I. Your pocket and must leave it sitting in the next room... So what the hell is the obsession with Bluetooth? Do people actually like headphones that require charging? That sound absolutely awful when played with no power on in order to power the headphone's DSP? Is it enjoyable paying money for a crappy DAC/amp that is built into the headphones and has inferior codec support? Or is it awesome to pay for lesser quality than you could get with the same amount of money spent in a USB C DAC/amp and a pair of wired headphones?
Unless the answer to all the above is "Yes", and then you really are completely insane, why the obsession with Bluetooth headphones? Does everyone but me fly all the time and just loathe the sound of the airplane engines so much that it is worth giving up equivalent quality for ANC for that one use case? When else do you really need ANC that your music doesn't block it out enough?
I just don't get it... I never did the buy some low cost headphones, then get medium cost ones and keep upgrading eventually getting great ones, and spend a ridiculous amount of money in the end... I went straight for excellent quality everything. DAC/amps, IEMs, and over-ear headphones, one pair each. All wired, with Bluetooth capability! I also did months of research in every and all aspects of audio and what was available to get the absolute best, without going overboard on diminishing returns, at a fair and affordable price! Wasn't that bad when you search for deals, and now I have gear that will make me happy for at least the next 10-20 years, more if cared for! Everything is from companies that offer lifetime support as well!
