This. I don't know if GOS apps are copies of AOSP ones, I assume it is, for simplicity. If someone could be found to make the GOS apps "prettier", adding functions etc, I assume that won't even be really welcome, as it won't make it possible anymore to just "copy" the AOSP apps for usage in GOS adding work. Means, if those apps shall be enhanced, one should do that directly upstreams in AOSP. I'm not aware of how it really is, but from hearsay, only devs are accepted/allowed to make anything in AOSP, any requests, suggestions and everything else, from "normal" 3rd party people, shall just being closed categorically. If that's true, there's nothing to do. I doubt any "prettifications" or other improvements, as good as they'd be, won't ever find a way upstream into AOSP...?
That's a topic I'm personally interested. Must have to join matrix to ask the guys personally...

I like GOS' UI in general, simple and elegant. But the AOSP apps aren't.

TRInvictus I think all the AOSP apps have high quality open source competitors. Why not install them ?
For me, I am pleased with some of the default AOSP apps ; I have just installed

Aves for the gallery,
GBoard for the board since I have found no open source app adapted to swiping in french,
Etar for the calendar, if I remember well, for synchronising with my server.

The other apps are default.

Have you tried Florisboard ? I can't tell if it's better or worse, but it works well in azerty.

No offense to anyone, but the AOSP apps shipped do not match GOS' style at all, they're so fancy colory, I can't use them.

Absolutely. But eg. the contacts app cannot be replaced, as there's no way of setting another one as default in the settings.

graphy00 This isn't in the scope of GOS and would just take away from the projects goals

Also IMO Android UI looks good, so do most simplistic FOSS apps that take advantage of it.

Thanks, that's one of my drawings and it dates back a few years, the girl I had as my avatar before is a slightly more recent drawing.

graphy00 I remember the good old days of Nova Launcher and others but for some reason they all started to introduce unnecessary "features" like built in weather and crap that only bloated the app. Adios.

I do think that GOS' launcher could use some very selective features like:

The ability to add more groups to the bottom in such a way that we could slide this bottom-bar to show another road of 5 groups.
The ability to turn-off the background sliding animation as you change "desktops/pages" so the background always stays centered would be an excellent feature.
The best and one customization feature that everyone would love would be the ability for users to create our own color palette for the OS to use rather than relying on the system to choose some crappy color palettes from a set background where 99.99% of the time the colors you like don't really get used by the system/apps. The whole color palette selection system is crap.
I don't know if this would be a way to fix/prevent/bypass the fingerprinting issue.

With that said I trade all of these for a smooth, fast UI with proper light/dark themes. Navy Blue on dark theme. Help

I don't know if this is the right place but I am too lazy to make a new thread. Back in the day I used to like TouchmFlo 3D on my HTC Touch Diamond with a page slider. Haha no, the original designer is Juanjo Guarnido, I was a freelance illustrator for a while and now I'm training to be a system and network administrator. When my new Artstation page is ready, I'll publish it because drawing is still a passion for me.

graphy00 I've been using GrapheneOS for some time now, and also normally being annoyed by open-source projects that aren't too beautiful, I have to say that GrapheneOS ESPECIALLY looks very well designed to me. Upstream AOSP choices don't affect anything negatively, too. I don't really see a problem with the UI or anything, however I understand people who aren't satisfied with the pre-installed calculator or clock app. But those can be easily replaced! I'd say it would be better to customize your phone on your own, because to this point, GrapheneOS has been one of the most beautiful FOSS software I've seen.

@graphy00 you are exactly on point. Don't be bothered by all the nay sayers. Bottom line is, however, that GOS will not be changing their direction for all their reasons.

But you are right and your feedback is gold.

Fyi my GOS looks almost identical to a samsung phone. But see the new user won't know how to do it and only see the first impression (black and white and barebone system).

They are indeed quite terrible. The least the project could do is make them gray/black rather than that glaring, eye-gouging white.

AlanZ For years and years on iOS I tried very hard to emulate the look of GrapheneOS. I mean way before I knew about GrapheneOS. Couldn’t stand the garish brightly coloured child like iOS UI. Each to their own I suppose!

I know that, thank you. If you choose "always", you won't be able to select any other app anymore, until you uninstall the default-one you selected. Or is there another place than the default-apps in settings to change/revert that?
