How do I manually control the camera's focus? The only controls I see are for zoom and exposure.

Tap the screen on the area you want to focus. It's still auto focus but that is the best you are getting with the stock app.

OpenCamera (probably several others) has more options, including manual focus if I'm not mistaken.
