Does anyone know if the pixel fold came with the same DP Alt Mode software lock that the pixel 8 did? I trying determine which is a better investment and this is really the deciding factor.

I'm not 100% sure what is meant by "software lock". When the 8 hardware shipped, Google's first couple of software releases had the DP Alt Mode driver disabled with a flag, but the hardware itself supported DP Alt Mode. I think what matchboxbananasynergy is indicating is that the Pixel Fold doesn't contain the hardware to do DP Alt Mode. Assuming that's correct, there is no need for a "software lock", and also no way to get around a "software lock" that isn't present.

With respect to the 8 series, what I have read so far is that the available software for driving an external display is partial and not rock-solid. More information here:

So what's available now may or may not meet any given user's needs.

de0u Ah, I think I rushed to respond to that one. @de0u is correct.

PIxel Fold lacks the hardware for it.

8th gen Pixels have the hardware for it, but stock OS disables it for the time being (presumably till they polish their desktop mode). GrapheneOS enables this.
