Win 11 won't detect the phone!?!?

Hey guys. So I updated everything on both the phone and Win 11. I entered dev mode, and unlocked OEM. Still, the laptop doesn't detect the Pixel 6a. I tried multiple USB cables and 3 different Win machines. But in Device Manager, all I ever get is "Unknown USB Device (Post Reset Failed)".

I already did my own Pixel 6 and I am now doing this Pixel 6a for a friend. But I seem to be stuck.

Any suggestions?

I tried with two Win machines (,Win 10 and Win 11), with a stock Pixel 6a and with my Pixel 6 running Graphene. Updated EVERYTHING. Tried with 3 different USB cords, including a brand new one.

I'm at lost here.

1.) Check the USB-C cable is compatible with data transfer. Sometimes some USB cables don't support data transfer.

2.) put your phone in fastboot, plug in your device, then enter updates and see if any optional updates appear. I know windows usually takes a bit to find and install drivers for the device.

3.) Report back what device manager says about the device in fastboot, see if you can update the drivers there

See https://grapheneos.org/install/web#connecting-device, the key points are that the drivers must be selected from the optional update dialog (View optional updates) while in the bootloader interface.

You can obtain the driver from Windows Update which will detect it as an optional update when the device is booted into the bootloader interface and connected to the computer.

Open Windows Update, run a check for updates and then open the "View optional updates" interface. Install the driver for the Android bootloader interface as an optional update.

Have you tried to manually install the drivers?

... obtaining the Windows fastboot driver is to obtain the latest driver for Pixels from Google and then manually install it with the Windows Device Manager.

As for the device manager, it should show up in Portable devices.

The instructions from Android developer site link above, provide instructions on how to manually install the driver in the device manager. You do not need to install the studio related stuff, just the winusb driver.

If your goal is install GrapheneOS on the second device, and you have one Pixel running GrapheneOS already, then you can use that phone to install GrapheneOS on the other Pixel. GrapheneOS is an officially supported OS for running the web installer.

I tried everything you just wrote. Still the same results across the board with both Win 10 and Win 11, and with both the Pixel 6 with Graphene and the Pixel 6a with Android.
I boot up in fastboot, plug the phone to lappy.

I tried with 3 different cables, same results: every minute or so a window appears: "USB devise not recognized" and in Device Manager, I see detected : "Unknown USB Device"
The window stays on for a few seconds, than closes, and nothing is detected, as if there was nothing plugged. One minute later, it starts again.

PepeLapiu Odd, I have no experience with windows sadly. I can't help you on that part, but I could suggest two things:

Using another android phone on the web installer (requires USB-C to USB-C)

Using a live linux system, installing fastboot and adb, and using the CLI

I should say I tried 4 different USB cables. Two of them were the OEM cables that came with the phones, and two of them were cables bough at gas stations. I'll try a high end one from BestBuy when I get into town.

PepeLapiu The one that comes with the phone, if it doesn't use a converter, should work. I would plug it into another android and try the web installer

I did download the driver. But I have been unable to either install the driver, or let Win Update install it's own. Because the machine does now recognize the phone. When I plug the phone, I get a window with the following text:

"USB device not recognized. The last USB device you connected malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it"

And all I see under Portable Devices is D:/ and nothing else.

Before I can install the driver, I have to get Windows to recognize the phone.

Linux is not an option here. I need some windows apps on my machines and I was not able to install a dual booth on either of my machines.

Also, I already tried with a different phone: a Pixel 6a with stock Android and my own Pixel 6 with Graphene. Same results.

I'll look for an upgraded cable at BestBuy.

You need to install the drivers first! Then it will recognize the phone.

Sorry, I don't know how to do that under the current circumstances.
Here is what is going on.

Under "Portable Devices" nothing happens. All I can see when I plug the phone is a new entry under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" saying "Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed)".

But under Portable Devices, Alli see listed is the D/ drive. Where should I install the driver?

Step 1. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove the "Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed)".

All I can see when I plug the phone is a new entry under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" saying "Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed)".

Step 2. Unplug your device. Restart your Windows PC.
Step 3. (If you haven't done so already) Go to https://developer.android.com/studio/run/win-usb and click Download the Google USB Driver ZIP file (ZIP). Extract the zip file.
Step 4. Follow the instructions here https://developer.android.com/studio/run/oem-usb#InstallingDriver. From those instructions on that link, for their step 7, locate the USB driver folder where you extracted that win-usb* zip file.

I carefully followed your instructions. But I got stuck at #5 in the link where it says "Right-click the name of the device you connected, and then select Update Driver Software."
The name of my device does not appear. Now that the "Unknown USB Device" is uninstalled, plugging the phone to the laptop results in the phone charging, but it looks as if the laptop doesn't detect anything plugged in. The only item listed under "Portable Devices" is D/ drive.

I should also add that I have tried this with 2 different phones: a Pixel 6a with Android, and a Pixel 6 with Graphene. And the laptot doesn't detect either of them.

So I swithched to an other laptop. Same result: both of the laptops fail to detect the phones, with nothing but D/ visible in "Portable Devices".

Damn! I read your post a bit too late. I convinced myself that the problem was with the laptop maker (MS) and so I bough a 3rd Acer laptop.
And it's not working very well so far.

I'm going to try with installing Graphene on the Pixel 6a with the Pixel 6 I already use. Will report on progress/results here.
