Hello,
I'd like to buy a Pixel tomorrow.
I'd like to buy the one with the highest level of security. I'm not necessarily aiming for performance/battery/camera or anything else.
But is the 300€ price difference between the 7a and the 8 worth it?

From what I understand, here are the major differences concerning GOS:

  • OEM support for at least 2 more years (which is the most interesting for me)
  • hardware memory tagging
  • the new ARMv9 CPU cores
  • other features I didn't mention?

Regarding hardware memory tagging, I didn't really understand whether it would be very useful for me. It allows you to protect the base OS and user installed apps, but to what extent and in what cases exactly?

Thank you in advance for your sincere recommendations regarding this purchase.

Hardware memory tagging is cited by the project as the most important feature it has shipped in production since the project started in 2014. It's definitely not negligible, which is why 8th gen Pixels are highly recommended over previous generations.

    Thanks for your reply,
In fact, I can see from my research that this is a recent feature and that it greatly enhances the security of the device.
But is this MTE feature only available on the 8th generation or did it already exist on previous versions?

Elio 8th gen Pixels are the first Pixels to have it, as it requires an ARMv9 processor, which previous generation did not have.

Thanks for your answers, I'll definitely go for the 8.
