  • If you need to re-register RCS to troubleshoot, try un-registering by entering your number here:

    https://messages.google.com/disable-chat

Then use the steps above to re-register. Un-registering and reinstalling Google Messages over a data connection (not WiFi) worked for me the other day. I was having trouble re-registering until I unregistered first.

  • I just had RCS stop working recently. I tried going through the initial setup steps again, but it didn't work. I then tried to uninstall Google Messages and unregistered my number here:

    https://messages.google.com/disable-chat

Then I rebooted my phone and reinstalled Google Messages on cellular data (not WiFi, if that makes a difference). I already had given Google Play Services permission to read my device identifier and have Carrier Services installed. Within a few minutes of opening the app, Google Messages registered itself for RCS! I am not signed into any Google account on my device or in Google Messages.

  • NetRunner88 Thanks for the clarifications. I'm aware of LLMs weaknesses, which is why I tried to run through the steps on my own before sharing. It definitely wasn't as concise or perfect for every situation, so I appreciate you clarifying some of those details. That was helpful.

I imagine any MVNO that uses AT&T's network would also need Carrier Services installed, right?

Thanks for mentioning adb. I've used it several times before, but not for this specific thing. I definitely prefer to use vetted tools rather than questionable third-party apps, so I'll keep this in mind for the future.

Why do you say you don't need to enable phone number verification in sandboxed Google Play? This seems to be the only change I made after the day I tried to enable RCS and it got stuck on the "verifying" step. Is there a way to manually verify your number?

What part of my configuration resulted in me "giving everything to Google"? Installing Play Services with network access? Enabling automatic number verification? Installing Google Messages with network access? I intentionally didn't sign in with my Google account anywhere on this account, even in the browser. But perhaps they can associate it with my account via my phone number, so I see your point. My understanding was that RCS from Android to Android was encrypted. I know it's not encrypted Android to iPhone yet though, so I imagine Google may have access to that.

Based on what you are saying, I'm thinking there's sadly no way to use RCS without handing revealing information over to Google. Is that accurate?

I'm still weaning myself off Google, so I haven't gotten to the point of fully cutting off my relationship with them yet. I'm soaking up what I can learn on this journey.

  • I am having the same situation. Did you find a way to fix RCS?

    Some additional observations for me:

    • Status is showing Connected in the RCS section of Google Messages.
    • Yesterday, the message would send and just give me one circle + checkmark. The second circle + checkmark indicating delivery to the other contact did not show up. The other contact did not receive the message either, so this was an accurate delivery status. If I tapped on the message that didn't send, it would give me the option to resend as SMS. If I resent as SMS, the iPhone user received the message.
    • Today, the message does not even send. It says "Not Sent. Check Options." in red. If I tap on Check Options, it lets me try to resend the message as either RCS or SMS. If I resend as RCS, it instantly goes back to Not Sent.
    • I have an Apple ID associated with my phone number, but I have never owned an iPhone. I have an iPad signed into that Apple ID though.
    • If I turn off RCS, kill the Messages app, clear its cache, restart the phone, reopen Google Messages, reenable RCS, and verify number, it switches to Connected in less than a minute.
    • Now it's doing the same thing it did yesterday, i.e. it "sends" the message (one circle + checkmark), but it says Note Delivered Yet. Check Options. If you tap Check Options, then it says Message delivers when [contact] is online...

    Any assistance would be welcome!
