  • Using Entrust Identity MFA for work, crashes every time it starts. Using Google Play Services and installed from the Google Play Store. Anyone else using this app successfully?

      • As per the paper below both Google Messages and Google Dialer (Phone) call home via Google Play Services for every message/call sent/received.

        https://www.scss.tcd.ie/doug.leith/privacyofdialerandsmsapps.pdf

"We report on measurements of the data sent to Google by the Google Messages and Google Dialer apps on an Android handset. We find that these apps tell Google when message/phone calls are made/received. The data sent by Google Messages includes a hash of the message text, allowing linking of sender and receiver in a message exchange. The data sent by Google Dialer includes the call time and duration, again allowing linking of the two handsets engaged in a phone call. Phone numbers are also sent to Google. In addition, the timing and duration of other user interactions with the apps are sent to Google. There is no opt out from this data collection. The data is sent via two channels, (i) the Google Play Services Clearcut logger and (ii) Google/Firebase Analytics. This study is therefore one of the first to cast light on the actual telemetry data sent by Google Play Services, which to date has largely been opaque. We informed Google of our findings and delayed publication for several months to engage with them. On foot of this work Google say that they plan to make multiple changes to their Messages and Dialer apps."

      • matchboxbananasynergy To get notifications working I only needed to allow Network and nothing else for GSF and GPS (with unrestricted battery) . Since I don't download from the Play Store I allow nothing.

      • I use Spotify (paid) but recently discovered you can stream the YouTube Music library for free with apps ViMusic or InnerTune. Either app is better then the native Spotify app which is a heavy slow ugly mess.

        • unwat Installed the beta versions of Google Play Services. No issues so far.

        • unwat I see two displayed versions for Google Play Services. An "Available" version 23.04.13 and an "Installed" version 23.05.14. I have Google Play Store installed but I do not login, I use Aurora store for apps. I don't recall Apps ever updating Google Play Services.

I installed the beta version (34) of GmsCompatConfig recently and since then my phone has crashed and rebooted twice. Wondering if my older version of GPS maybe responsible. Don't see an obvious way to initiate an upgrade within Apps.

          • muhomorr Tested the beta and location accuracy works indoors. Thank you.

          • unwat Installed the beta. Location accuracy works indoors now.

          • user Same. Is there a way to force an update? Was hoping to test if it fixes my location accuracy issues.

            • daffy Tried Here We Go Maps and it takes awhile to only provide an approximate location.

Next time I'm traveling I'll carry my old Samsung phone instead.

              • unwat Google Play Services does have access to Nearby Devices. No Geolocation issues listed under Sandboxed Google Play Services.

Funny thing is it's somewhat of a bonus that with all these permissions enabled to permit Google to know where I am, it still doesn't work. Although I'm currently in a foreign country where this functionality would be useful as it's making things like using Uber a real pain.

                • I have "Reroute location requests to the OS" disabled, "Google Location Accuracy" enabled, "Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Scanning" enabled and permitted Google Play Services location to "Allow all the time". Although Maps or Organic Maps cannot find me unless I'm outside. I can't order an Uber unless I'm outside since my phone only uses GPS. Is there anything else I'm missing?

                  • androidin

androidin Unfortunately you can't. One of the many reasons I miss Samsung phones where you can easily reclaim the space taken up by an unnecessary gesture pill bar.

                  • Anyone using Fastmail have notifications working? I have Network permitted for Google Play Services but still no luck.

                  • On a new Pixel 7 Pro with 2022122700 "All files access" and "Install unknown apps" settings get reset after every reboot. Not randomly, consistent every time.
