  • An update: Sadly I am giving up on VOIP/SIP for now. I have been messing around with this for almost two months now and I am still having major technical issues (e.g. the other party can't hear me after a certain period of time). I Tried about 5 different apps and have been in touch with my ISP and SIP providers more times than I can count. I still don't know the root of the problem at the end (I resolved so many along the way). What I learned:

    1) VOIP.ms is an SIP provider - their support is excellent. They are KYC though and they don't have their own app unfortunately.
    2) Virgin Mobile technical support literally has no access to advanced settings. There is no one that can tell you Port numbers for example. Their customer service is excellent for basic things but limited.
    3) Some of the apps have problems with GrapheneOS specifically around push notifications. Linphone worked the best for me. I used the independent app "VOIP.ms app" for SMS
    4) Be prepared for a lot of DIY work. I was motivated and full of energy but I eventually gave up.

    • SEE Hmmm... seems like it builds the library as you go then swipe works. Wondering if I should give it network access long enough to download a library.

    • Murcielago Swiping doesn't work for me either. I think maybe you need network permissions for swipe to work. Not sure. Anyone manage to get a swipe keyboard working well? I tried AnySoft Keyboard for a while, I'm giving up on it though.

So I'm a month into it and I has to say I am pretty happy so far. VOIP.ms app is working really well and push notifications work fine with GrapheneOS. There is a bit of a delay receiving messages to VOIP.ms app (less than a minute) which is fine with me. I still receive the messages to Linphone first so I get the message notification twice. As I mentioned, Linphone doesn't display the SMS properly or else I wouldn't need VOIP.ms app at all. Linphone is fine for calling though. Still no MMS functionality, however VOIP.ms app adds a link to any MMS content. There was a problem with a recent update from VOIP.ms however the owner of VOIP.ms app Michael Kourlas fixed almost immediately and VOIP.ms communicated the issue well after the fact. IMO it would be great if VOIP.ms could work with Kourlas or someone else to create a full service app that works well with VOIP.ms and included SMS, MMS and calling (with good security/privacy/encryption.

        • sardello I share your frustration. You are looking for training wheels. I have been gradually trying to get away from google myself, unfortunately my work is on GSuite (so everything). What I did was start by getting onto the proton platform. I use protonmail to aggregate all my emails now. I did the same with proton calendar. That way at least I have access to all my emails when Im away from my computer. I really like protonpass and protondrive as well. You can't "send from" or use a gmail alias from Proton mail, but you can forward everything to your proton email at least. I am grooming contacts not to expect me to respond by email all the time.

Installing sandboxed google apps is a good interim step. They at least have limited access in GrapheneOS, unlike when you are using an android and they have access to everything.

Do you know about the Aurora store app? You can download most google play apps there anonymously.

There are still some apps that google just does better like google maps. I'm trying to get used to organic maps. I was thinking about just getting a good SatNav for my car.

          Hope this helps.

        • So follow-up on my setup (SIP/VOIP provider VOIP.ms; Softphone app Linphone):

I ended up going with VOIP.ms for the SIP provider (sorry @applesbana ). They are Canadian and have great chat service and detailed setup instructions and videos. Also from Montreal. Rates really good. Unfortunately KYC so I had to give them everything.

I have installed and failed with the following Softphone apps: Session Talk, ACR Phone and Bria Mobile apps.

ACR phone - calling worked fine; couldn't see any SMS functionality (my oversight),
Session Talk - calling worked fine; SMS didn't work properly - I would see the notification but couldn't access the SMS or send back.
Bria - couldn't get the app going because couldn't register with payment details as I downloaded anonymously in Aurora store.

I have managed to setup Linphone as my Softphone app. Push notifications working and I can receive/send calls and SMS so far.

I'll update again after I have been using if for a bit. Thanks to everyone who chipped in!

          • Still curious if anyone has had any luck with I'm considering Acrobits Groundwire, Sessiontalk and Zoiper. Not sure if you can get the push notifications.

          • applesbana This could be a good option if it works well. Yeah I would take a referral code... It would give me a chance to see if I can get it to work for me. Thanks.

            • SaguaroPelikan Thanks for the recommendation. I hadn't thought of forwarding the VOIP numbers to a SIM. Not a bad idea. I would really like to get away from a SIM eventually though.

            • I would like to bump this thread again... Anyone have any luck with VOIP/SIP apps? Do the PUSH notifications work properly?

I'm considering Acrobits Groundwire, Sessiontalk and Zoiper at the moment.

i really wanted to use My Sudo but it doesn't look like it works well. Their support doesn't have any real experience with GrapheneOS

I would love to hear from people wo have tried these.

              • So you nailed it!
I figure the initial problem was I was using Brave and didn't have Brave Shields turned off...
The second problem was that I just transitioned to Edge (after unlocking the bootloader with Brave).
When I locked the bootloader with Brave, (closed the Brave web installer), unlocked the bootloader with Edge everything worked just fine.
Thanks so much! One less brick in the world ;)

              • Hi guys - I am trying to use the web installer to flash my Pixel 7. I am using Brave as a browser. The factory image Download appears to be successful:

                Downloaded panther-factory-2023121200.zip release.

Yet when I try to flash the release I get the error:

Error: You need to download a release first!

When I switch to MS Edge I just get the Error:

Error: Failed to execute 'claimInterface' on 'USBDevice': Unable to claim interface.

I can't seem to locate the downloaded image on my drives. I can't seem to find info on a fix for the Gnome bug that was mentioned above. Also the CMD line install instructions are really over my head. I am a bit of a noob. Any help is appreciated!
