Thank you @Dumdum that was the setting I was missing.
Is there a way to disable certain apps from restarting themselves after a reboot? I'm thinking of Cheogram and Signal specifically. I only want them running when I choose to open them, but in the app settings there's no option for this.
I'd love to see the letters beneath numbers too because it helps me remember my passcode using a word. When you go to change your passcode under Settings > Security > Screen Lock... they are shown there, so it's not like it's impossible. :-/
