other8026 Considering emails aren't encrypted, you might want to use a different email service if you don't want Google to have the ability to go through emails' contents and other metadata.

this might sound like a dumb question but ive been searching for an encrpyted alternative to gmail and ive stumbled upon proton mail , which i think is one of the most popular ones out there

i am curious, is there a way so for example a person mygoodfriend[@]gmail[.]com email me at mytrackinggmailacc[@]gmail[.]com will be forwarded to my new encrypted email at mynewencryptemail[@]protonmail[.]com, and then when i reply using mynewencryptemail[@]protonmail[.]com it will then be forwarded to mytrackinggmailacc[@]gmail[.]com and then sent to mygoodfriend[@]gmail[.]com?

    • Hb1hf Aurora apparently doesn't verify apk signatures

other than this, there are other apps that dont run on the phone unless it is verified to be downloaded to be from the google playstore.

i had a banking app not work because i downloaded it from the aurora store

      • other8026 If you want or need to continue using a Gmail account, then there's nothing wrong with that. You could consider setting up an email client to sync with Gmail, so that way you wouldn't have to install the Gmail app. You can also consider setting up a profile that you only use when necessary with Google Play and Gmail installed. Some people install Google apps in their "daily driver" profile.

would you say that using an open source email client to login to my google account is better than logging in using the official gmail app? what are the pros and cons of each if you may explain?

i ask this because as far as my knowlege (which is not very much as i am not a very very techy person), it does not matter since i am still using google's email service so they still "see" my emails whether i use a open source email client or the official gmail app. is this correct?

        • Dumdum i apologize for asking something that have already been asked before. i will do better next time and look first thoroughly before posting something

          • i do realize that the whole point of using graphene os is to degoogle and increase our privacy and security in general, but in this world wherein people use gmail all the time, i just also need to use gmail.

if i give people an email address that does not end in [@]gmail[.]com, then they will give me a hard look and ask me whether the email is legit and can be accessed.

also prior to degoogling myself , i have a lot of accounts that i signed up or using my [@]gmail[.]com account so i just cant "leave" my [@]gmail[.]com account very easily

i am currently looking into open source alternatives to the gmail app like fairmail and k9 mail, but it just feels different and just feels a little off so i am thinking of installing the gmail app again on my graphene os phone.

i just want to know what are the considerations and configurations that i should think about when installing the gmail app. what permissions are necessary and which are not so that i can reduce the tracking that google does on me?

            thank you

            • Onlyfun disabled by admin

this looks like its disabled by the admin user by default
or maybe this is disabled permantently for some security reasons?
              im not totally sure

            • Pocketstar

Pocketstar I've just compared the three apps once again to be certain.

wahh! thank you for the effort on investigating this.. im not much of a photo person so i miss a lot of details, but i also want my pictures to be nice and crisp since i take a lot of pictures

Pocketstar This is not a defect, and it is also not a limitation of running a custom operating system.

this is a very intersting new thing that ive seen.... im gonna read about this

just another thing, since you mainly use opencamera, which does not do any post processing on the images, do you manually edit each and every pic that you take?

              • Pocketstar When you zoom in on a photo made with gcam you can see a subtle increase of light (which I referred to as "white lines" another one of my silly naming conventions) right next to sharp edges of objects.
There also seem to be some darker contrast as well on the other side of sharp edges. (Like a photo of green leaves)
This is an artificial enhancement of photos, they have been processed.

i just tried taking some photos using the gcam and i did notice them until you pointed them out in detail here! im also not a photography person but i would just like nice photos of random things that i take photos of.

Pocketstar Especially if photos are printed on poster format or A4 paper, the edge enhancement of the GCam app become too appearant, it does not look pretty.

this is a very good consideration since i sometimes print some of the images that i take

              • vagr

vagr On that note, I tried FUTO and it is a great project. Whenever I can I try to contribute to their keyboard data but at the moment the swipe function is very limited and off by a margin that makes it unusable for me

as someone who also uses swipe type a lot in my phone because i feel its faster, what keyboard are you using now if not gboard?

                • vagr replied to this.
                • with the topic already on gboard and other alternative keyboards, will the swipe typing work on gboard correctly without network permission?

                  • Pocketstar thank you very much for clearing these out with me. i now understand what happens when we use the gcam application.

thanks also for providing the original link for opencamera, ill give this a go and experiment on it.. ill see the main differences between the gcam and opencam

                  • Pocketstar thank you very much for detailing these things.
i would just like to ask, does opencamera also do post processing on the images that you take?
by untampered, what do you exactly mean by that?
                    thank you

                    • so we all know that images shot from a pixel device such as a pixel 7, pixel 8, pixel 9, etc... are really really good, crisp and clean. why is that? is it because of the pixel camera APPLICATION? or the camera HARDWARE on these pixel devices? or is it because of the POST PROCESSING that the google photos do to the images?

also since we are all using graphene os, if i install the stock pixel camera and google photos from the aurora store, will i also get the same post processing?

or am i all wrong in all of these aspects? can someone enlighten me with this?

                      thank you
