Hey all! Long post (sry)

I’ve lurked around here for a while trying to gather as much info as I can.. and watching videos from sideofburritos and listening to the closednetwork pod.

I’m currently coming from years down the road of iOS, and a few touches of android for comparison reasons.
I really want to make the move, but I guess I feel.. afraid? I’m so locked in this iOS comfortability. And yet, I want nothing more than GoS.

I bought a used pixel 7a and installed GoS with ease. I’m not a techie person so I just don’t understand everything that’s mentioned here, but I’m willing to learn! Privacy and security lies close to heart.

My biggest struggle is choosing g-play or aurora for my most important apps.
I live in Sweden and it’s a cashless society, therefore bankapps/digital identification must work flawlessly.
But what option is best?

Also: is downloading protonmail/mobile and Bitwarden via obtainium a viable option?
Or should they come from google repo?

I guess I’m just afraid of compromising my data/credentials as I’ve never dabbled in aosp & foss.

Currently I’m using owner profile just for call / msg / signal through obtainium. (Haven’t inserted simcard yet, just setting phone up)
And a second profile with some gplay apps that I installed with a new account with no ties to me.
But I’m questioning myself if I’m doing it right.

Also have no ties with Gmail etc anymore since I’ve spent long time de-googling myself for an easier switch.
And yet.. I’m afraid!?

Google Play is the more secure option. Aurora works just fine, but is less secure. Many people create accounts just for installing apps. You can consider doing that if you don't need to log in to other Google apps.

This might be an issue for you. I'm not sure if the apps you need to use will work for you or not. You can use the forum's search function to see if there are any older discussions about apps that you need to use. You can also check out this unofficial banking app compatibility list. You can see there are many entries for banks in Sweden.

Either should work. I use Obtainium to keep a couple of these apps updated. Google Play updated Bitwarden for me afterwards, so now I just allow that too.

No worries about that. You may find that you want to adjust your setup a few times before you find one that works for you.

Switching from apple to android is a tough change. Switching to "privacy android" i think is a doubly tough task. I recommend you make some things easy for yourself and don't chew too much.

Maybe start with gplay and only 1 profile.

You can start imperfect, get used to android, then 6 months down the road have a redo and go more sophisticated once you are more comfortable with android.

Second option is, have a profile with gplay installed and ready to go in case you need it. But use aurora on your main profile. Any app that fails you can try in the gplay profile.

If you have Swedbank they have their own app for NFC payments, maybe more Swedish banks have too, dunno. BankID and all I've never had any problems with on GOS (had it for 2+ years), nor Klarna, Swish, Kivra or anything. The better option is to get those apps from Google apparently, or so they say, without me knowing the ins and outs of the security aspects of that really

I've been an Apple user for several years before I switched to GrapheneOS. I still have to use iOS devices due to work and other obligations on regular basis and sometimes feel like I miss a certain kind of convenience. However, for me, personally, most of this comes down to UX stuff - smoother animations, just the right amount of haptic feedback. In comparison my Pixel feels a bit raw, if you catch my drift.

But I wouldn't go back. I've come to enjoy the bareboneness of a GrapheneOS device, the control over my stuff, the nifty things the devs come up with and make GrapheneOS devices as secure as they are. But most of all, and I repeated this a lot in the last few weeks, I've never felt betrayed by false marketing promises, never felt brainwashed. In short, I trust GrapheneOS, the devs behind it and the GrapheneOS community as they treat its userbase with respect and honesty - and that's worth indefinitely more than fancy animations.

So, take it slowly, get used to your new OS and feel free to ask for help if you encounter any problems along the way.

Thank you for the answers. I just filled my guts and took a shot at it. Now I’m really into it, messing around and seeing what happens.

If I screw up; hey, I got an iPhone for backup until a new raw install of gos is made.

I’m slowly getting the hang of it!

And to top it all of: I unintentional deleted my digital ID, so I can even use my banking apps for a few weeks. Guess that made everything easier as well.

I liked the posts regarding some tips on apps to download. A few apps made it feel more at home as well.

It might not be much.. but thanks!

An option might be getting a credit card that supports microchips. It's a small bracelet you have around your wrist.

Bank Norwegian has them, for example.
