[deleted] you will be able to install divestOS and keep your phone for 30 years.
Let's make it a challenge.
2023-30: GrapheneOS with full OS and firmware updates
2030-35: DivestOS with OS updates*
2035-41: DivestOS without updates but most apps will still run and get updates**
2041-50: By then you might be able to install postmarketOS on it :)
So who's going for Pixel 8 Challenge 2050?
*DivestOS currently supports the Nexus 4 and 7 (from 2012, i.e. 11-12 years old) although they're stuck on Android 12 (2 versions behind). They support the Pixel 2 (from 2017, i.e. 6-7 years old) with the newest Android 14. So let's say DivestOS supports ends 12 years after the device gets released and will at that point be 2 Android versions behind. Might be better or worse for the Pixel 8, who knows.
**Android 14 now blocks apps that were made for any target API below Android 6. This will be a rolling block, e.g. Android 15 can only run Android 7+ apps. (Note that you can still install these apps with adb
if you want but that's quite inconvenient.) So we might use 8 years as an estimate for how long apps are going to support older Android versions. If DivestOS will be 2 Android versions behind at end of support, this might mean you can still install and run most apps for another 6 years or so.
