System updater tries to install update, but seems to fail

Hi, this is a follow-on to https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/9645-javalangruntimeexception-could-not-copy-bitmap-to-parcel-blob/4 where I incorrectly stated that UQ1A.231205.015.2023120701 was the latest currently available release. It can be seen at https://grapheneos.org/releases#changelog that there are newer releases available. However, the GrapheneOS System Updater app (app.seamlessupdate.client) seems to be unable to install them (exits silently without producing an error message).

In Settings > About phone > Build number, the value UQ1A.231205.015.2023120701 is shown. In System > System update > Check for updates, when I tap the button, notifications from System Updater are displayed for "Downloading system update" and "Installing system update", but then nothing happens after that. If I tap the button again, the process repeats. Rebooting the device after installation completes has no effect, although a notification appears after some time signaling that app optimization has completed. The build number never changes at any point.

raxod502 have you restarted to apply the update? Maybe try that and see if your phone updates to a newer version.

If that doesn't work you can try sideloading, then keep an eye on it to see if the updater app continues to not update after new releases.

However, I would expect that if my phone had some issue which was preventing updates from being applied, then I would be notified, or would receive an error message when trying to install the update, or would at least see something in adb logs for the updater - rather than simply nothing happening at all.

I can check back when there is a new version of GrapheneOS released, to see if the same problem occurs. Is there anything else I should do to troubleshoot in the meantime or when a new update is released?

That is indeed what to expect.

In the past various people have thwarted that process in various ways, e.g., disabling certain notifications from the updater.

Another possible issue is if one of the blocking options is enabled and the blocking condition holds.

Or... have you tried resetting the cache and storage of the updater?

raxod502 interesting. According to the updater code, the line onPayloadApplicationComplete: 20 is an error.

It seems to be some sort of initialization error, which can be caused for a few different reasons (if I'm reading the AOSP updater code correctly). Regardless, hopefully sideloading has fixed the problem, but if you get it again, it might be worth reporting to see if one of the project members have an idea of what's causing it.

Yes, I made sure to check before posting that all the notification categories for System Updater were enabled. I also checked the blocking conditions and even tried turning all of them off so that updates would always be allowed, but that didn't make a difference, either.

I've now cleared the cache and storage of the updater, and when the next GrapheneOS update comes out, I guess I will see if it resolved the problem.

As far as I can tell, this problem is persistent. The GrapheneOS updater just doesn't do anything unless an entire new image is flashed. I'm currently on 20240113, just triggered the updater today, yet the releases page says the latest version should be 20240126.
