Default Gallery App not updating image's orientation after "Rotate left/right"

The issue occurs on both main profile without any GPS and the secondary with sandboxed GPS installed.

open the default Gallery app
select an image
use the "3 vertical dots" button in the upper right corner
select "Rotate left/right" option
The default Gallery app continues to display the "rotated" image using its old orientation.

When sharing the image in the app like Signal, the image has the correct (updated) orientation. After switching profiles and reopening the Gallery app, the image is being displayed correctly as well.

This DOESN'T happen when in the step 4. one selects "Edit" instead of "Rotate left/right":

open the default Gallery app
select an image
use the "3 vertical dots" button in the upper right corner (or use the "pencil" button in the bottom left corner and skip step 4)
select "Edit" option
select the third button from the left in the bottom of the screen
"Rotate"
"SAVE"
The default Gallery app displays the image in the updated orientation immediately upon saving.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

krysor I can confirm it doesn't work for me. You still rotate the picture by pressing "pencil" button in bottom left and choosing rotate from bottom menu though. Is seems to be performing activity that is no longer supported. By the way AOSP gallery is not affected by presence or lack of Play Services.

This is rather a side point but one that might be helpful for you and avoid this issue altogether.

Are these images photographs you have taken with the Camera app on your phone? You may want to check that you have enabled the sensors permissions for your preferred camera app.

If you do so, all the photographs that you take thereafter will be displayed with the correct rotation in any Gallery app you may choose to use.

treequell You were right. The permissions for the GCam were disabled while being enabled for the stock Camera app.

In case this issue would have been confirmed by more users, is it worth adding it in the issue tracker?

That's good. I would recommend keeping the sensors permission enabled for any Camera you use so it can access the gyrometer.

You could do that but bear in mind that the default Gallery app is from AOSP and is essentially unmaintained except for security patches. The GrapheneOS development team want to replace the app altogether eventually.
