Google Classroom not working

Unfortunately, as a college student, I am forced to stay in the Google environment because of Google Classroom.

Two days ago, I managed to install GrapheneOS for the first time. I created a second profile to install the sandboxed google play services and it apparently worked (I could use GCam and GMaps). But, for some reason, Google Classroom won't work. When I open it, a pop-up appears, saying "Classroom won't run without Google Play services, which are not supported by your device".

What should I do?

Could you please expand on how you installed sandboxed Play services? The recommended method of installation is installing Play Store from the "Apps" app (GrapheneOS official app repository), which also installs the required dependencies (GSF and Play services). Also, make sure Play services is exempt from battery optimization.

Google Camera & Maps work without Play services (Google Camera only requires GSF) so they might not tell you much. Have you seen a persistent notification telling you that "sandboxed Play services are running"? What happens if you go to Settings > Apps > Sandboxed Google Play? Also, have you tried installing Google Classroom after you installed Play services? Some apps may require that to make use of Play services.

If none of this worked, then you should disclose the debugging information privately to GrapheneOS developers. You can do that by using the bug capture tool in developer settings, or adb logcat from a PC. We may give you more details if it comes to that.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

I installed both Google Services Framework and Google Play services (in this order) from the "Apps" app that comes with GrapheneOS and the persistent notification you mentioned is appearing. The battery optimization was on. I just turned it off and the problem persisted.

I am not sure what was supposed to appear when going to Settings > Apps > Sandboxed Google Play, but for me there are some options, like "Usage guide", "Play services app info", "Google Settings", "Reroute location requests to the OS", etc.
I tried reinstalling the Classroom app 3 times after installing the sandboxed google play services and nothing changed.

Should I open some kind of issue on the Graphene OS github? I am very new to degoogling so I am sorry if I understood something wrongly.

You could also try to find the relevant debugging lines (in the way I explained above) and share them. If you feel they could contain private information, then it's probably wise to communicate them privately.

Did you install Play Store?

This Play Store isn't just a front end. To use the sandboxed play services all 3 packages need to be installed. Remove Classroom and the GSF,PS you have already then open 'Apps' in the app drawer followed by selecting Play Store then install. Takes care of all 3 packages in one tap to install.

Follow that by tapping sign in to initialise them then either actually signing in or using Aurora to install Classroom.

Without Play Store you cannot to the tap to sign in and initialise them and the compatibility layer proper.

Installing the Play Store solved the issue! Didn't know this app was necessary as well.
