Two-factor Authentication Issue

Hello Everybody,

I have been using GrapheneOS on my Google Pixel 6a for quite some time now. I really like the security features which allow me to have full control (I hope) over what can be accessed or not. Thanks a lot for that to the development team.

However, I experience a little problem with that. I cannot figure out how to make it work.

In any other Android phones, when I received a call to authenticate myself accessing the services in the internet, I can get authenticated as soon as I press the hash (#) key on the on-screen key pad.

It does not work like that in GrapheneOS (of course with the same SIM card). It seems that the hash key code that I press is not forwarded. It does not really matter how many times I press the hash key. After some time I just hear the voice telling me that they cannot authenticate me.

Could anybody suggest what to do?

I thought I already explained how it is supposed to work. But let me try again step by step.

From public internet via a web browser, I login to my bank account or my company portal where two-factor authentication was setup for me to receive a call from their authentication system
After I enter my username and password, I receive a pop-up window offering me an authentication button for me to click
After I click on that button, the authentication system starts calling my mobile phone
On my mobile phone, I answer the call and it asks me to press the hash (#) key (or any other key depending on how they are setup) to confirm that I receive the call
After I press the hash key, I hear the voice telling me that I am successfully authenticated and it hangs up the call
On my web browser, I am forwarded to the landing page for me to access the services

If I use my Google Pixel 6a with GrapheneOS, I cannot proceed forward at step 5 as the authentication system says that it does not receive my confirmation and tells me that it cannot authenticate me.

I have to remove the SIM card from my Google Pixel 6a and insert it either into my Samsung Galaxy A50 (Samsung original Android) or my Xiaomi MI 9 Lite (LineageOS), then I repeat the steps from step 3 (by clicking the Retry button first). I can then successfully access the services.

I hope that is detail enough. If not, please let me know if more information is required.

Try installing a different DIALER application and see if that works better. It may be a bug in the AOSP dialer that it can't start off with a pound symbol.

Thanks for your suggestion. However, changing the Dialer apps was the first thing I tried.

I posted the issue here with the hope that I missed something in the settings relevant to the Phone/Dialer apps. I have this issue since the first day I used GrapheneOS a year ago. It looks like the issue (if that would indeed be a bug) is quite fundamental as I am still experiencing it until now.

I have just raised an issue ticket #2753 on github. I hope it will get better attention there.

anto I use old-style voice mail on Verizon, which requires the dialer to produce #, *, and number keys. All of that has worked for me for more than a year.

I think whatever you are experiencing is probably rare enough that the developers can't reproduce it, and if that's true they have no way to take action.

Have you tried borrowing a SIM card from a different carrier?

My ticket #2753 was just sent to trash a few seconds ago without any suggestions on what else I can try.
