How to Install Molly-FOSS with notification?

Tried to install Molly-FOSS but it seems I cant activate notifications when Molly is locked. Could someone please explain how to activate this? A easy step by step guide would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is what they say on their Github;

We are happy to introduce the latest addition to Molly: the ability to receive generic activity notifications when the app is locked with the data-at-rest passphrase. Simply enable "New activity while locked" in your Molly notifications settings.

Please note that due to current server constraints, this feature is exclusively available for users of FCM and UnifiedPush notifications.

Use the regular (FCM) version of Molly or the UnifiedPush one. Its clearly mentioned in the text you quoted that "due to current server constraints, this feature is exclusively available for users of FCM and UnifiedPush notifications."

I tested UnifiedPush one version but could not enable to get notification when app is locked.

For the UnifiedPush version, do you need to run your own push server? Or does it work automatically as long as the app ntfy is installed on the phone? (That's how Element works.)

Did you happen to download the right Molly with the Unifiedpush? It doesnt seem to work for me with that link you have

Thanks, it seems to work!

I had to download that specific version you linked, then go to Settings -> Notifications -> Delivery Method and select Unified Push. In Unified Push details it says "Status: MollySocket server not found" and "Notification method: ntfy".

I'm a bit concerned about the MollySocket Server, but as long as it works...

FYI if MollySocket is not set-up correctly or is down, Molly will fallback to using the WebSocket, see here:

Would there be any conflict if you use UnifiedPush version and have GPS installed? Should you go with the regular version if you have GPS installed?

If you mean "GPS" as in Google Play Services, there shouldn't be any conflicts, the Molly UnifiedPush version is forked from the FOSS variant of Molly, which uses Websocket as a default for notifications and contains no closed source blobs(including Google's)

[deleted] Seems like you didn't install or properly set up ntfy or molly-socket on your server. The app will then fall back to websocket notifications.

I have Molly-UP installed (Molly-v7.17.5-1.up1-FOSS) on Pixel 8 with GOS. The mollysocket docker is up and running. NTFY.sh is used to push notifications. Notifications will come in while Molly is unlocked, but will not notify when locked. I've tried to enable Settings>Notifications>Notify When ... New activity while locked, but i get a popup that says "Push Notifications unavailable" and that it requires FCM or UnitedPush. I don't understand. UP is being used. Am I missing something?

I realize this is a little off-topic for this thread which is intended for Molly-FOSS but for Molly-UP the only suggestion I can think of is making sure it's not configured as a "secondary linked device" which will make UnifiedPush notifications unavailable.

The behavior you speak of is "normal" when using Molly-FOSS however. I learned that while switching user profiles only to find out Molly-FOSS stops functioning when doing so or when its database is locked.

dogcake It might very well be that you didn't set it up correctly. I just tested now since I have two phone numbers: one of my clients is the UP version. I set it up with my UP server and the database locked in the app. I lock the app, go to my other client and send a message. What appears is an instant notification that I might have new messages (just as expected). What I assume, is that UnifiedPush isn't even enabled for your Molly and thus complains about missing UP. What does the server status say in the "Unified Push" section in Molly? If it is anything other than "OK", something is wrong.
