Broken display, any way to transfer files?

It started with some dead pixels in the corner of my P6P. That stabilized and was usable for a while but then the screen started to flicker then brightly flash. While flashing the screen was unusable. Now the bright flashes are almost constant, occasionally I can get in and do one or two things before the screen 'whites out.' I was able to back up photos with Synology Photos and use Synology Drive to back up Keepass database.

I bought a P8P and I'm trying to figure out a way to back up and transfer messages, contacts and calendar. I probably have a couple months old sync of contacts on my email server, mailbox.org and I don't use calendar that much so really I only need to back up messages. I think I'm using SimpleMessages. Is there any way to connect via USB and transfer files without having to initiate from the phone? Any other ideas?

So I was able to get onto the phone for a little while. I'm using the stock messaging app but couldn't find a way to export messages. I was looking to see if there's a way to transfer files over USB. Under Settings > Connected devices > USB Preferences I can't figure out how to switch 'USB controlled by' from 'This device' to 'Connected device.' I enabled developer options and under 'Default USB configuration' set it to File Transfer. Connected the phone to my laptop but still cannot see the device. Any other settings to try?

I can't figure out how to switch 'USB controlled by' from 'This device' to 'Connected device.'

For me that setting is accessed by scrolling from top, then in notifications there should be a message "charging this device via USB". Press that then it should show you the options.

I installed SMS import/export and after seeing that there are over 5,000 texts, most of which I've never gone back and looked at, I think I'll just start fresh.
