Recommend avoiding the stock gallery app. Not only is ancient but it does not support the trash, which is a default in many apps today.

Thankfully I was able to recover my files with the File Recovery app. But yeah I will use the Google Photos app from now on.

Johnny Make sure to revoke Network Access. Or use a FOSS alternative like Simple Gallery or Gallery from F-Droid.

Johnny I have Google Photos installed without Network Access, but I only use it to quickly look at a photo taken with the Google Camera, since it can only open photos in Google Photos. I really like Gallery, it has a similar UI design to Google Photos. It lacks photo editing functionality, but that's what Image Toolbox is for. I've been using this combination of apps for quite some time and so far I enjoyed it.

Sorry for the late reply. I used "File Recovery." There is a free trial, and if you disable network access, it doesn't kick you off the free trial when it expires.
