Lag and freeze issues after update (Pixel 5)

I tried various suggestions above, though none worked. After several reboots, eventually the issue seems to have just resolved itself. OS not updated at all.

I'm experiencing the same issues. Has the root cause been found? My phone is unusable.

I found a temporary fix when using default launcher. When you experience the issue on any profile after switching, do the following:

Settings -> Apps -> Launcher -> Force stop

This will restart the launcher, and I've found the past few times I've had the issue it fixes it.

I just tried your fix, and it works well, thank you :)

I get this problem at random, and before, I would simply reboot but just force stopping the App Launcher is way quicker. I am using default app launcher as well.
I will see if it fixes it the next time I am facing the same issue, but before a proper solution is found, I will settle for this quick fix.

Hampirico Personally I've only experienced such freezing on my Pixel 7 when using a secondary user profile, which I use primarily for testing. I daily drive in the owner profile, and when doing that, I've never experienced such issues.

Thanks for chiming in. I'm starting to think this is exclusively a multi-user problem. I'm going to stay on the owner profile with both my 6a and 7 Pro for a few days and report back.

UPDATE:
So both my wife (Pixel 6a) and I (Pixel 7 Pro) have stayed on owner profiles for a few days and there have been ZERO issues with lagging and screen freeze.
As soon as she went to her "social media" user and back again the issues started again.

However, we discovered that "end session" on the secondary users seems to do the trick.

So, for now, we just have to do without the cross-user notifications, which is OK until a fix comes out.

I'm wondering if it's the fact that I've installed "Insular" on the owner profiles of both phones. Could that be causing an issue ?
Is there anyone with multiple users having this screen freeze / lag issue who DOES NOT have work profile activated on owner user?

I have freezing issues again on my Pixel 7 and multi user profiles, this fixes it:

For me, as long as I "end session" on my multi user profiles, all is well. No lagging or freezing.
Out of interest, do you have the work profile active on your owner profile using Shelter or Insular or Island?

I have my owner profile (in which I do nothing), my main user profile (in which I do my everyday life) and another profile for Google Play service apps and sensitive apps with restrictions (no contacts, no location, etc...).

This issue seems to have made a return on my 8a. After switching to secondary user and back, apps in the owner profile lag or freeze and swiping up doesn't minimise them or bring up the app selection screen. Only way out is locking and unlocking again, after which there's a couple seconds of wait until the device becomes responsive again.

I don't have pin scrambling enabled but I have Revolt installed in the secondary profile and they recently made pin scrambling mandatory for their app. Could that be related?

I'm having this on my 8 Pro now. Owner profile only. Started while using Eternity (Lemmy client). Reboot does not fix it. This is driving me crazy! I have been using this for years with no issues. How do I make this go away and get my swipe gesture back? I've gotten swipe to work rarely, but after a few swipes, the app cards and my app icons on the desktop (the place I can move/drag app icons) all disappear and I am left looking at my wallpaper for a few seconds while they come back, similar to how it looks when I first log in after a reboot. Did gestures just start crashing my launcher? Why does button-based navigation not crash it when I enable that?

Fwiw, I have never had any issues on my Pixel 4a 5G, and I'm using multiple profiles.
