should automatic updates through Play Store work?

I have never received a notification about an app update. Always have to check manually. Should the automatic updates work or is this a general limitation?

afgncaap Yes, they should work. They do on my device. Have you waited between updates? In my experience, the Play Store doesn't update apps as soon as it can for some reason. Sometimes it takes a couple days after it detects an update before it goes through with the installation.

Note that for auto updates to work, Play Store also has to be the designated installer for a given app, meaning the current version of that app on your device must have been installed through Play Store. You can check this in the info page of your apps in settings.

Edit: I don't receive notifications about updates either, even though they work.

afgncaap You don't have to manually check for updates. Play apps update in the background, but from my experience your device needs to be idle for a long time (think 4 or more hours) and/or charging for that to happen. It goes without saying that if your Play profile (assuming you don't Play services installed in Owner) is at rest, no background updates will happen.

Auto-update with the Play Store has always been hit-or-miss for me. I've posted about it before seeking for a resolution to its finickiness but I haven't been able to resolve it.

Check if you gave play store notification permission and the specific notification category is enabled

233328 Have you set Play store's battery usage to Unrestricted? If it doesn't work, try the same with Play Services and Play Services Framework.

Titan_M2 Yep, Play Store notification channels related to updates are enabled. I'll try enabling other channels as well, and setting the alarms as Default rather than Silent, just in case, even though that shouldn't make a difference.

From your comment I assume you do receive notifications upon updates from the Play Store? If so, I might have stumbled upon a weird bug...

The Play Store does not send notifications when auto-updating apps. I don't think it has for a few years

Okay, thank you guys. I'll watch what happens if I do not manually check for updates two weeks. too bad that there is no at least optional notification
