Proton Mail notifications

After thoroughly researching this, I still can not get them to work. All 3 components of Google services are installed. Network permission given to GSF. I've never signed into the Play Store. Can anyone post their own steps for actually getting the notifications to work? I have tried all sorts of things involving those 3 components.

router99 ProtonMail uses FCM for Push notifications. For that to work, Google Play Services, Google Play Store and Google Services Framework all need the network permission enabled. For more information, please see: https://grapheneos.org/usage#sandboxed-google-play-installation

router99 I also have this issue. with google play, google play services and GSF all with network permissions enabled. Also proton mail has network and notifications permissions enabled. what a I missing? thank you

treequell Well, somehow I got it to work since my post. I have Google Play Store disabled. Here are my settings in case anyone else had trouble:

Google Services Framework has network permission, notifications on, and optimized battery usage.

GmsCompatConfig has no permissions, notifications off, and optimized battery usage.

Proton Mail has notifications on, permissions for network, notifications, and sensors (but really, do I need to give it access to sensors? I think I just neglected to turn it off when I installed it), and optimized battery usage.

If there are any other settings involved that I neglected, or anything that can be further restricted from the above, please reply with that information.

Just a little note on the margin. It seems extremely lazy of we can say now a large privacy focused company not to implement their own backend for notification handling like e.g. Signal or Tutanota, especially considering they charge premium for certain advanced features. I myself a premium user have kind of lost trust in them, since they have been promising to their community for at least 3 years they have been working on it, albeit with no ETA.

With that set-up, you might get FCM functionality to work for a while, but ultimately it will break again. Google Play Services and Google Play Store are highly co-dependent.

If you want to use sandboxed Google Play Services reliably you should have Google Play Services, Google Play Store and Google Services Framework all installed, and all with the network permission enabled.

GmsCompatConfig is part of the OS, and you should not change any of its permissions from the default.

The thing is by default the Sensors permission is granted by default to every app. You can disable automatic grant of Sensors permission to installed apps in Settings.

I don't see how. Google Play services manages the push notification functionality itself and does not require the Google Play store in any way for that.

@router99 You're overcomplicating matters here. The sandboxed Google Play Services works out of the box when you install it from the GrapheneOS Apps app. You don't need to change any of the permissions for FCM push notifications, as they get set correctly automatically. Users can just follow the instructions here, and it'll work fine. The reason you've been experiencing breakage with push notifications is because you've been tinkering with permissions, when there was no need to.
