Is there a way to mute all sound notifications of messenger apps but not the ringing of a phone call? In LOS there were two seperate switches. In GOS it seems to be just one that regulates both. My wish would be to get optical notifications of messenger apps, but no sound. Phone calls should ring. Is this possible?

dirksche yes, per app notification settings. Set those that you don't want to hear to silent, while those that you don't want to miss keep default. With each app you can also have different settings per notification channel.

[deleted] But switching off in settings>notifications>app-settings turns all notifications off. Even if I just want to mute the audio notification

dirksche that is not what I suggested you to do. I didn't tell you to turn them off, just set to silent (and also per notification channel). Please read my post again and experiment with it. I am sure you will eventually find your solution if you are patient.

Hmm. I ask where I can find the settings to mute individual apps, or even all messenger apps, and you answer: "per app notification settings". That's exactly the setting I'm looking for, but I can't find it. Unfortunately, being patient doesn't help. I've been using the system for almost 2 years now and have found and set everything so far. But that's where I'm failing at the moment. Could you please explain to me briefly how I can mute the app "Tusky"? Where exactly can I find the "per app notification"?
By the way: are you a bot?

dirksche Could you please explain to me briefly how I can mute the app "Tusky"?

          1. In the launcher, press and hold on the icon for "Tusky".
          2. Press "App info".
          3. Press "Notifications".

Exactly what happens next depends on "Tusky". There may be a global enable/disable toggle which may be what you want.

BTW a DuckDuckGo search for Android per-app notifications returns relevant content.

          dirksche I can't find it.

          Go to the Settings app -> Apps -> <App Name> -> Notifications

dirksche A bot? You must be joking. Send us a play store link for the app in question, since there are several Tusky apps in there so that at least we can agree on what we are talking about. I will install it and send you a detailed explanation to swiftly end your ordeal.

Maybe my question was disleading. I try it on a different way. Is it possible to volume down (not mute) all app notifications, but not the phone ringing?
I ask because in LOS the were TWO volume toggles. One for the volume of the phone ringing and one for app notification. With that I was able to set the volume of for example Threema very low and keep the volume of phone calls high.

At least I want to see that a message comes in, but not hear it.
[deleted] I use Tusky from F-Droid. I know the possibility to toggle different notifications on and off in your described way. But in Tusky I have only the possibility to witch it on or off. And I thought that means that there will be NO notification: no popup and no sound?

@[deleted] @de0u I'm so sorry. 🤦 Now I see what you try to tell me. If I don't use the toggle in the app notification setting but klick on the text, than it opens a new menu, where I can just mute the sound.

Thank you for your patience. 🥰

I know this is an older thread, and you may have found your answer, but I accidentally noticed the quick solution ... it's NOT obvious.
Also, I have a newer pixel, but I assume that if your OS stays updated, this should work:
When you press your UP or DOWN buttons, for a moment you will see a dialog (it only stays there for 2-3 seconds, so you may have to press one of the volume keys again).
At the bottom of the dialog, you will see 3 dots. Press that ... ah HA!
You get separate Media, Call, Ring, Notification and Alarm volume controls.
That's the fast access. You can also get there more slowly through the SETTINGS->Sound & Vibration menus.
