How to know if an app requires GSF

I need to use the GroupMe messenger app for work. I installed it in another user profile, but I attempt to login or create a new account it closes the app.

What steps do I go through to determine if I need GSF on this profile to make it work? Or are there other setting sthat may be preventing it's functioning?

I just tested the app on two user profiles, one with Google Play Services installed, and one without.

In the profile with Google Play Services installed, I was able to create a new account using my email address fine.

In the profile without Google Play Services installed, when I tried to create a new account, the app crashed.

Therefore, it appears that you do indeed need Google Play Services installed to use this app.

I am using sparkos Feb version with GMSCompat.
I am just updating The "GMSCompat Config" apk
From github of grapheneOS.
GMSCompat apk is Still old which is in Feb. I even checked graphene OS github for GMSCompat I don't see any major changes. And there is no any apk file to update the GMSCompat.

But for config there is Apk. So just updating Config enough for privacy. Or I should have to stop using sandboxed Gapps.

Is there an article that describes the best way to have google play services in a profile? Additionally, if I let GroupMe send notifications across profiles, will that give info to GPS additional info?

No, enabling notification forwarding doesn't give Google any additional info. The notification forwarding is handled by the OS, not Google Play Services. That said, GroupMe may depend on Google Play Services for receiving push notifications in the first place.

You need to give all three of Google Play Store, Google Play Services and Google Services Framework the network permission. I don't believe any additional permissions are required.

treequell Thanks for the help. I was able to get it installed and login. It event functions with play services not having network access. I haven't tried the notification forwarding yet.

Sandboxednoob In response to your message in the other thread, I'm moving this here to keep the conversation in one place.

If you would like to use GMSCompat on SparkOS, you would need to build and maintain your own fork of SparkOS. Simply installing the GMSCompat app as an APK is not sufficient to then be able to run sandboxed Google Play Services on that OS.

I need to resurrect this discussion. I posted something on reddit, but was then sent here. This is what I wrote there:

I found a two year old discussion in the forum who said they got it working under a work profile, but doesn't work here now.

Can install app, and then try to login via email. Takes credentials, asks for phone number, and has a button to send text for verification. But this throws an error. There is a popup:

Play Integrity API usage GroupMe used the Play Integrity APi

And an unexpected error Try again at the bottom of the screen.

Have tried adding some permissions, but this is the farthest I've gotten. Tried using the Gmail login, too. Any pointers appreciated.

The private space has Google services and playstore installed, of course.

It seems likely that it failed the Play Integrity check (not certain though). You can try disabling Play Integrity checks for the app. If that doesn't help, and if it is indeed the Play Integrity check that is the issue, there's basically nothing you can do except try to convince the app devs to not block GrapheneOS.

Probably9857 Last option would be to enable exploit protection compatibility mode as some apps also don;t work properly unless native code debugging is enabled. If you get it to work using this mode, you can then start to enable our hardening again one by one until you find what breaks it again.
